As the election seems to be taking over the general moan thread (not surprisingly) please use this thread for moans about the election.

I don’t know, what do we expect? Would you take on a painter and decorator who just puts a leaflet through your door, promising wonders? Would you be surprised if the wonders were not delivered?

@Obelix-Vendée things are different with us being a village. Our hall is a charity, the money to build it was raised by donations and refunded to the donors (no interest added) after it was built as grants couldn't be applied for until it was up and running .

We, the charity managers, decide how the hall is run and the local authority has to abide by it or go elsewhere. The only other choice is to close the local school for it - which is not unusual in a lot of places. The counting of the votes for our Constituency is done in a few central areas as we have 18 Wards (separate voting areas).

Elections are always held on a Thursday in the UK and have mostly been so since 1918 when the Representation of the People Act 1918 restricted it to one day only. Some rare exceptions have been made and usually when the World Cup started on a Thursday :heehee:.

The general thought on why a Thursday is that it couldn't be held on a Friday as that was normally pay day and people would go to the pub and, if still sober enough, could be influenced by the mainly Conservative interests of the brewers and on Sundays the people may be influenced by the mainly Liberal thinking church ministers. Saturdays were trialled but it cost the authorities too much in overtime. Don't bother to ask me about Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays :nonofinger: :roflol:

I usually work as a Poll Clerk in our village hall, it is council owned so they trump (bad word) pre booked events. Last election I was running through the forms of ID with a chap who had a little toddler in tow, he wasn't taking anything in and said he was dropping off his daughter for play school. The hall was packed and I had to explain what was going on, he obviously hadn't heard about the election nor read his messages from play school. I guess he took her to work or called in sick.

This morning's fear headline in the Tory press is that Starmer has plans for a nationwide ULEZ charge. Well that can't be right cos the initials won't work!

Anyway, I'd wager he will have enough to do without opening that particular can of explosive worms!

Surely he would be able to decide whether it works or not as it only stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone. He could even bring it in for all towns and villages and charge anyone if they have a vehicle that emits any level of emissions he decides upon.

Hold on a moment, he could even charge you for breathing or farting! :loll:

I’d vote for the one who says they’ll introduce a farting fine.

Let's get back to Farage for a moment: it is our fault Putin invaded Russia, and the King is an eco looney, really, he becomes more like Trump everyday.

Not sure they would do it nationwide and call it a zone, but you can bet your bottom dollar that they will impose something in every town and city at the least; pay-per-mile is pretty much a certainty too.

That isn't exactly what he said though, is it? He clearly said it was Putin's fault (and for clarity, he even said "it is Putin's fault" - what he was essentially saying is that by NATO expanding, despite agreeing with Putin it wouldn't (you know, back when we were friends and wanting their gas and oil) that NATO essentially gave him the excuse he could feed to his people.

You definitely can't have a nationwide "zone", IMV. :)

@Fat Controller, they might, I guess. My worry is Starmer and Reeves attended Davos this January. No hope of a ULEZ-type charge on limos, private jets, and the like, then. :th scifD36:
