Many years ago i had to deliver some goods to a very tight place, months before hand letters + info that on this and that road there will be no parking at all, the day before police coned off all places to park, the day came for me to do my bit, well as i got the the place there was 1 car that parked on the corner, police tryed to find said owner but they didn't, anyway after 2 hours waiting the police gave me the OK to go the car was a write off and my boss clamed for the damage's to the lorry & trailar, so if there is a no parking sign + police cone's don't park there

 

It was on our local news this morning regarding illegal and bad parking in the lake district. The proprietors of local businesses are having issues with deliveries, the drivers are phoning back to base saying they can't get through so they are told to return to base. This is resulting in small convenience shops and pubs running out of food and drinks, plus causes a headache for the local farming community. This time of year is important to certain areas in the Lakes as they don't get all year round tourism which towns like of Keswick enjoy. It is also causes major issues with the emergency services and mountain rescue when they are called out. Like most things in life, its the minority who spoil it for the majority.

Yesterday I had to drop off my daughter at Heathrow as she was off to Thailand with other Uni students to gain teaching experience. We set off early due to travelling from the West coast of Cumbria, as we got there early no one else had turned up. I did not want to leave her alone, so stayed until someone else from the group arrived, it cost me £20.50 for 2hrs and 7mins parking, rip off.

 

Back in the 70s where I worked was near the Tuesday market, early the police would arrive and put no waiting signs all along where we parked all the week.
We used to just throw their cones over the wall into the coal yard.

But one week a very nice traffic warden gave us all tickets, so about 30 of us all walked to the police station together with the tickets, the copper on the desk said I'm not processing this lot and took them off us and threw them in the bin.

Back in the days when common sense prevailed over the jobs worth and the money grabbing councils.

 

In France and Belgium it's illegal to park across anyone's drive or garage entrance and offending vehicles can be towed away. It worked well, even in Brussels where triple parking ws not unknown outside popular bakeries, and seems to work well here too.

If there is a need to clear parking in a road for a scheduled heavy load or some sort of road or services work, nobody holds up the project waiting for offending vehicle owners to turn up. The warning signs will have been up at least a week in advance and offending vehicle just get shifted.

I used to visit the Lakes a lot, even before Pa lived there for the last years of his life. Even then I did wonder why there were not more park and ride areas with small buses to take walkers and climbers and tourists to their destination. I've seen the coverage of problems in Wasdale and can't believe how stupid some people can be.

However, it was the same during Covid when people behaved really badly leaving human waste and all sorts of gear and rubbish just dumped anywhere and dogs off leads worrying sheep and cattle. Utterly selfish and thoughless.

 

I didn't think it was unless it has one of those white lines painted across it, but I might be wrong.
Either was is pretty stupid if you do, probably get torched around here.

 

I think the rule is you should not block a vehicle in on a driveway, but you can block it out, ie park across the entrance if there is no car there.

 

I have a theory about the bin men around here.
If you put your bins to one side so you can get out, when you come home the empty bin will be dumped in the middle of your gateway so you have to get out and move it to drive in.

If your car is in the driveway they will also dump it in the middle, but its not so annoying.

 

Ah, I thought it was the other way round, ie that you couldn't effectively keep someone hostage on their driveway (in case they were on their way to A&E or to perform open heart surgery or such like), but you could block them out as they can park elsewhere and still come and go to their dwelling unimpeded.

 

I get the feeling there is an increasing lack or respect and courtesy with regard to parking. Round here, if it's badly parked it's bound to be a Parisian here for a visit.

We have 2 wheelie bins, one for recycling and a smaller one for general rubbish. They are emptied on alternate weeks except July and August when all the holiday and 2nd homes are busy and they're both emptied weekly. We have to put them out with the handles facing roadside to say "please empty". They are then put back in the same place with the handles facing house side to say they've been done. No bits and pieces left lying around and no entries blocked.

Simples.
