It would definitely be preferable. You need someone who understands the area.

But areas vary massively. In SW Wiltshire for example you have rough bits next to very expansive, wealthy estates.

I think anyone who wants to stand for parliament should spend at least a month living on the poorest estate in their area, just to get in idea for what it is like and the obstacles people face in getting by. It is incredibly easy if you have money to segregate yourself and pretend these things just don't exist.

I know people who have made poor life decisions but work their socks off trying to turn their lives around, who are held back by our housing and NHS crisis and lack of amenities. We need people in power who really understand that.

 

I agree @Fat Controller and the same goes for being capable of voting sensibly

I think if you want to vote and are adult enough to be informed then you surely should be adult enough to register, I presume 16 yrs olds will have to take a responsible adult along with them to the polling station.

 

I’m all in favour of 21 being the minimum age for a lot of things

 

I can think of a lot of OAP's that shouldn't be allowed to vote. We could lower the voting age to 16, and then have an upper limit of.....75 after which you can no longer vote.

 

Beginning to think there is no such thing.
