A comparison between projected number of seats and percentage of vote, in the poll posted by @Fat Controller , suggests that proportional representation is the only fair and democratic way to conduct elections... ok, you sometimes have to get fifteen recounts to decide who's elected, but it does reflect much more closely the preferences of the voters.
It's on page 20 if you want to have a look.

This is going to be the most perfect time that will ever present itself to bring in PR as the foremost beneficiary of the current system, aka the Tories, won't be able to thwart any legislation.

Agreed, @ViewAhead - though this time it'll be Labour who are the main beneficiaries of FPTP.

I find it interesting that defenders of the current system claim it leads to strong government. History shows that strong often means headstrong, or worse... what's wrong with listening to people whose ideas are different from yours, but may have some merit?

Labour has less to gain from FPTP if the Tories regroup and poll strongly in 2029. Best to have lots of smaller parties opposing you than one big one. It just depends whether Starmer can persuade his fellow MPs to think that far ahead right now.

I do think it is very considerate that the entire world has made sure absolutely nothing newsworthy (you know, war and stuff) happens during the UK election campaign so the 24/7 coverage is not disrupted by "events".

Depends who it is and how it is administered. Ken Livingstone did a hell of a lot of good in his term, to the point I don't think he ever got the credit he deserved. Boris was pretty useless (no surprise there) and Sadiq doesn't have a fabulous record on things such as violent crime etc. I do wonder how much they are hamstrung by the officials under them, in all fairness. TfL is one of those behemoths where things are often done or not done for no apparent reason.

This is problematic on so many levels for me. Seriously! The Tories seem to believe they have some god-given right to be in power and anything else defies sense. The sheer arrogance after what they have put us through is breathtaking.

That's just political electioneering. All parties are saying similar messages

Sunak’s desperately adopting Churchillian rhetoric after having ‘left them on the beaches’ on D Day to go electioneering … despicable.

If she's elected she'll soon get the idea of the constituency being a priority knocked out of her. Rule 1 seems to be "Do what you are told by the Whips".

I watched that election debate last night. What made me snort was Sunak's mention of how he was concerned about his daughters getting jobs or being able to walk down the street in safety. Their parents are mult- billionaires FGS!
At least Starmer had the decency not to bite. It is really not appropriate to bring your children into an election debate.

And yet they were quite happy to surrender our futures to a Truss premiership. Oh, the irony! :gaah:

Apart from the wording, the image is completely inappropriate - an elderly person, a young woman, and a child, all groups particularly vulnerable to violence against them, shown under coercion.

Fortunately I don't simply surrender myself to such cynical views but make efforts to see that our MP sticks to what has been promised as far as possible. It has worked in the past and, hopefully, will continue to work. I don't sit back and cry about it and just let it happen.

What difference does their parents wealth have to do with it. Most sensible parents, rich or otherwise, will want their children to learn the value of money and the benefit of hard work. Having wealthy parents who are in the public eye probably does make it less safe for his chidren to walk down the street.
Maybe he would have been better simply to say 'young people' instead, but the issue is the same.

He said he was worried about it. I'm pretty sure he could find them a job somewhere. I think it's unlikely that they will ever wander about the streets without security . It smacks of Sky TV deprivation. He hasn't got a clue.
