Muslim donor Zia Yusuf just gave one of the most patriotic speeches I've ever heard for "Islamophobic" Reform in a packed out NEC! Gotta laugh at all the pathetic attacks in the media when I see stuff like this.

In the village where I grew up there was no village hall, pub or similar. There was just a tiny stone built school of 13-27 children. My mother was a school governor and felt that it was wrong for us children to lose a day’s education for an election so my parents made our drawing room available as a Polling Station. Ou farm was in the middle of the tiny village and the drawing room was at one end of the farmhouse and had a separate door onto the front lawn, and this was the door used. In my mind’s eye I can still see the poster saying POLLING STATION stuck on it. As I remember it the interior door, which could be accessed from the rest of the house, was sealed.
I think feeling involved in this way helped foster my interest in politics from an early age.

I think the problem is, @Ben Cotto, it seems to be once they get into Cabinet positions, pressure from wealthy interests is very heavily brought to bear, so even those who start out with the best of intentions find they are railroaded into decisions they might rather not take. That together with a complete lack of personal accountability for failures means public money gets squandered. There really should be a forensic focus on the use of tax payers' money by the media. Opaqueness allows poor decision making.

Indeed ... but I don't accept things have to stay like this. I don't accept that a US asset management firm should be allowed to buy up new builds here and then rent them out at high cost, meaning increase in values never benefits the locals. I don't accept that water quality should be degraded so shareholders can squeeze out more profit. I don't accept that work contracts should be insecure just so a few billionaire owners can live profligate lifestyles. I don't accept that tax avoidance should be possible.

A few changes could make a huge difference to the majority. The world should not be run by the few for the few.

Sorry, not quite true :noidea:. When they brought out the Old Age Pension Act 1908 it was non-contributory. Whether that was done that way to help sort out the type of problems that you refer to, I don't know. So they had obviously set up some type of government fund to kick start it.

It wasn't until 1925 that they brought in a Contributory Pensions Act and that was limited to manual workers and others earning up to £250 a year.

The full National Insurance Act wasn't until 1946.

In 1908, I think you had to show you had very limited means to get a pension. It wasn't a universal payment.

I remember discussing that point with some of the members of my family from the generation above me. Although some had been borderline poverty they didn't want to apply as they were too proud. Some of my uncles fought in the Boer War and WW1 and returned home without jobs. Fortunately they managed to get themselves out of poverty as both they and their wives worked hard.

You do have to wonder if any money or other inducements have changed hands. Stranger things have happened and thwarting their divine right to rule does seem to bring out the worst in the Tories.

How Sunak could say with a straight face this morning things are better now than in 2010, I do not know. Maybe he was just talking on behalf of his fellow million/billionaires.

I cant remember what it was like in 2010 to be honest.
My circumstances have changed a lot since then, but not everting was great, I think I was about to be made redundant.
I'm now retired so yes things are better than in 2010.;)

Well that obviously speaks volumes about the calibre and integrity of the Reform candidates involved.

We already knew the Tories were corrupt … seems as if those Reform candidates have found more congenial bedfellows.

Exactly what was the candidate selection process Reform employed? :what::dunno:

@pete, pleased for ya! :) But for many, since 2010, housing security, job security, utility costs, etc, have all got worse.
