They reckon, well according to the government website that 2.1 million households have a least one second home. There is supposed to be over 700,000 that are vacant, as in empty not even short term rentals or holiday lets, with a sharp increase since Covid. There was new legislation to try and bring these homes back in to the housing marketing by increasing the council tax, but there is a grace period at the moment. Since Covid, building materials have jumped in cost, then with the high increase in energy costs, insulation costs have spiralled, mortgage rates have increased and then when you take in to factor all new builds and renovations have to comply with more stringent energy efficiency legislations, then you start to understand why there are so many empty homes.

Local authorities can raise the council tax on second properties that are used for holiday lets, some already have with a 100% increase. To bring these empty homes back in to the housing market then the council tax increases depending on how long they have been empty, with increases from 100 - 300% but these were already being proposed before Covid, hence the grace period.

To renovate a home and meet the energy requirements of all the houses that are empty, the cost would be anywhere from 30 Billion to over 100 Billion depending on the size of property and how long is has stood empty for. Some houses are probably that dilapidated, it would be probably cheaper to knock then down and re-build.

There's a limit to how many you can read free, it stops poor people finding out too much about what Labour are planning to do to them. :heehee:

People want tax rises because they think that will bring them better services.
I think we have been told this kind of thing before, but somehow the extra money just gets swallowed up and achieves nothing.

I'm sure they will find something new to waste new money on.

People only invest in property because its the safest investment, if interests rates had been sensible you might have had more People putting money in cash investment but it's not been worth it for years so they go for property or the stock market.
Either way they appear to be wrong

The two main reasons people have a second home are. holiday getaway, long term investment. When there is a high cost of living, high-interest rates, and an incipient recession, it then becomes more difficult to get a mortgage on a second property.

I bet Hong Kong nationals are top of the list or at least in the top 3, which would of probably happened regardless of who was in power.

Some of what you have said is either possible, has already been mooted recently or is actually being brought into effect.

Some local authorities, mainly in holiday areas, are already limiting airbnb type properties by banning the use of them once it is past a certain amount in that area. It is only as a small project at the moment but can easily be grown.

A form of offshoring was started some years ago but only for individuals and not companies. This can be expanded but there is the danger of the bigger companies moving from here and reducing jobs. So has to be done carefully.

It should easily be possible for us to restrict buying of dwellings by non-residents but most of those that are already bought have been the ones well outside the price range of the normal person.

Some countries already only allow residents/citizens to own properties such as Canada. Australia also has regulations that prohibit most non-residents from buying existing properties but do sometimes allow them to buy run down or new dwellings with very stringent rules applied.

New Zealand also has restrictions on non-resident buying of dwellings. They also have strict rules on who can buy a dwelling. If you wish to retire out there you have to buy a property over 1 million NZ$ and invest at least 750,000$ in New Zealand for at least two years.

Singapore has some strange policies but they also don't allow non-residents to buy dwellings except under stringent rules.

Restricting buying of second/holiday homes could cause rather large problems as, if this was carried out it could become reciprocal with other countries and we would have a mass of retirees coming back from the Costas and buying houses here instead.

The rules that have recently been brought in to penalise people that have second homes to rent out as their pension fund has caused the rental market to shrink quite a bit and the houses are being sold off to purchasers. This has hit the people who are only able to rent homes :noidea:

I'm in favour of well thought out targeted rules for properties but not of taxes brought in just because of ideological reasons.

House prices have been allowed to get much too high (although I have benefitted out of it - if I sold my house and moved into a tent) and the only way I can see that increase in price being stopped is by an enormous amount of government funded housing being built with a non-profit main element in it. :phew:

That's why I said that too stringent restrictions could bring our ex-pats back and not make much difference to the available housing.

True, I don't think many of us know exactly how many of these second homes are getaway/holiday properties that are outside the UK.
