Starmer seems a decent enough bloke for the most part, he's made plenty of errors of judgment but as director of public prosecutions has more experience of making important decisions under pressure than many of his predecessors.

But power (especially the kind of majority he's bound to get) changes people, and rarely for the better.

The Sun newspaper, on the eve of the election when it seems all hope for the Conservatives is lost, has bravely come out for Labour

I think we will get a long drawn out couple of years, or more, of blaming the Conservatives when nothing improves.
Its usual practice and I dont see why this one will be any different.

He should never have been there in the first place. Some of the very first things I would change if I could:
            1. If a party wants to change leader, a general election is automatically triggered
            2. If an MP gets into trouble with the police (beyond a speeding ticket etc), they should be suspended whilst an investigation is carried out. If charged and convicted, a by-election should be automatically triggered and that individual barred from standing ever again.
            3. If an MP wishes to change party, a by-election should automatically be triggered.
            4. If an individual puts themselves forward in an election and does so affiliated to a party, they have to follow through to the end of the elections and cannot defect to other parties or become independent during the election period (once their names are confirmed on the ballot, that is it set and sealed), nor can they declare that they intend to defect; any declaration of such a nature should immediately render them wholly out of the vote, and voters made aware that any votes for that individual would be counted as spoiled ballots - if they want to defect to a different party post-election, see 3
            5. If a party has a candidate that they want to suspend or sack for any misdemeanour during the election period, again the process of elections should be followed and then subsequently (and immediately) a by-election should be called.

The theory is that an MP is elected to represent their constituents not a political party. If the MP feels that their constituents are better served if the MP moves to another party or independence, they have the right or even the duty to move.

The nearby independent councillors have recently endorced the lib dems. So much for being independent

Wow, according to this poll only 5% of Labour voters say their main reason for voting for them is because they actually agree with their policies!

Probably a summer full of boat arrivals that he said he was going to stop.

I understand that is the theory - but, I am sure you will agree that as many (if not more) people vote for the party and the person they want to have in No.10 as do for a local MP. Last time around, Kwarteng was my MP - - it may as well have been Donald Duck for all the interest he had in his constituency, yet this is traditionally a fairly safe Tory seat.

It most definitely is the 'get the Tories out' election.

Only 5% who cite that as the main reason. It will be a factor for many of the others too, obviously.
