Statements like that are based on how much money you have.
I'd rather they spent my money more wisely and more effectively.

Fairly close run contest here. Lab 37%, Con 32%, Ref 20%, Green 5%, LibDem 3%.

I've now to wait and see what our new MP (old one retired because of serious health problems) is going to do to help solve local problems.

Too soon to start moaning about the new MP as that wouldn't be fair. So may start moaning tomorrow :heehee:

I feel sorry for Larry the cat with all the comings and goings.

I would pay more tax ... provided all loopholes were closed first so that nobody, absolutely nobody, could wiggle out of a single penny because they are wealthy enough to do so. Make the system transparent and 100% binding.

Was it the candidate you wanted who was successful, @shiney?

Yet we are already seeing taxation at it's highest level since WW2 - so how high does it have to go to solve the problem? If it was a dual strategy, coupled with cracking down on waste, we'd likely get somewhere.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, Grant Shapps and Penny Mordaunt have all gone. (I liked Penny actually and think she should have become leader after Boris.)

Labour's Jonathon Ashworth has been narrowly defeated by an Independent. Didn't see that coming.

            This should worry us all:

            upload_2024-7-5_6-48-7.png

Those who would normally be centre-right/right in their politics simply haven't bothered to turn out because they've felt they had nobody to vote for (it would appear, at least), rather than there being a groundswell of support for Labour. It appears that Scotland has handed Starmer around 10% of the seats - again, because people are sick to death of SNP.

Ah well, good luck to Starmer and whoever he picks for his cabinet, they've got a country that is in a proper mess - who knows, if he makes a dent in fixing it before the next election, he might even win votes like mine back to Labour.

For sure, looking at some of the numbers, the FPTP system is not reflected in percentage of votes across the country.

Johnathon Ashworth initially comes across as quite a nice guy, however the more you see him, the more you see an arrogance about him (or at least I did) that was only ever backed up with soundbites.

Unfortunately no. The Labour candidate, now MP, was the only one who said absolutely nothing for the villages. I'll give him a little bit of time to get settled before pestering him. There are a quite a large number of voters/groups that shall start pushing so his office will be kept very busy. :)

Bleedin' Tories won in my area - I don't get it at all. Off the back of Kwarteng's performance, if that wasn't enough to kill their chances, I don't know what is. It has long been said locally that folks around here would vote for a dog turd if it had a blue rosette on it, and it seems that is the case.

Well Starmer managed to make the Labour party electable in a short time let's hope that he can perform miracles with the country too.

                      Truss has gone! :yikes:

Of course, when I mention all these big cheeses who have been toppled, "gone" almost certainly means shifted sideways to the Lords, thereby costing the taxpayers money in perpetuity. :th scifD36:

But it was Labour who left the Tories with a huge deficit. Tories tried to reduce it under David Cameron, but the country, already in the red, was guaranteed to become more so by the day.
Unless the country accept huge tax bills, the deficit will be even higher with every successive government. The pandemic didn't help!!

So gaining roughly 35% of the votes results in a landslide victory.

Sound like the kind of maths you get from some rigged election in Central Africa.
