      Common frog?

Argument for frog = brown patch behind eye, pointy face, long back legs. Against = skin not all smooth/slimy, not in water.

Could be a froad  Generally speaking, if it was crawling it's a toad. Frogs advance in leaps and bounds...

          I vote frog.
Toads are usually ugly looking things.

                I like a toad too @noisette47 ...couldn't eat a whole one though....:heehee:

I'd say frog for the pic too. Toads tend to be quite warty as well, whereas frogs are generally smoother skinned. That one looks quite smooth to me. We had far more toads than frogs at the last house, and you often found them under rocks etc. The spawn is different too [long strings for toads] but you'd need to have a pond to see that - obviously!
I had a frog here which was often leaping around on the grass, or in among plants. They don't spend a lot of time in water itself.

I have a lot of frogs but not toads, I find during dry spells the frogs spend daytimes in the pond and often move out in the evening before going back to the pond the next morning.
Rain after a dry spell often means the lawn is covered in frogs.

We've got both. The toads live in the borders and just use the ponds to spawn. The frogs are pretty intelligent. When French visitors are around there's a deathly silence until they leave. The croaking and chatting is deafening otherwise, when there are only Brits around. They seem to firmly believe that their legs are safe from Brits :heehee:

I thought toad initially when I first saw it, was eating a big earthworm too. It crawled. It seemed calm and let me take its picture. When I came indoors and looked at the photo it looks more frog like the flash has lightened up its colour. The brown eye spots probably mean its a frog.

I passed on the kissing test thanks for the idea @Loofah. Last year our cat was playing with a toad near the same spot and was unwell for a few days.

There used to be a fair bit of 'mixing and matching' amongst the amphibian population in the UK pond in the spring frenzy. I don't know whether it's physically possible for them to interbreed?

That reminds me of a film we were made to watch at school 60 odd years ago. It was about frogs mating, eggs, tadpoles and baby frogs. Afterwards we realised that was our one and only sex education lesson.
