Help! Broken Star Jasmine

Yesterday I moved my 7ft Star Jasmine plant for repotting. Sadly one of the mature side branches, that has a lot of stems, leaves and flowers, completely split from the main branch, with a long tear. This has physically weakened the affected area of the main branch (the tear graduates from 0% up to 70% of the diameter of the branch), which I quickly splinted using two cane's either side, held on with tie wraps, which has effectively strengthened it.

I would like to know two things please and would welcome any other advice...

1.
On the main plant, where I have applied the splint to the tear, should I apply a special product to the tear because it is exposed to all elements? And/or maybe I should cut off the other half of the tear from the broken part of the plant and hold it in place between the split or 'stick' it back on with something, and then put the splint back on?

2.
Is there anything I can do about the broken off branch? Currently the torn end of it is sitting in water. Could the entire thing be saved and made to root? It is about 5FT long and I'd hate to throw it away.

If the torn branch is still attached to the main stem and you've put it back together so to speak, then it may heal - but only if some of the torn branch is still attached to the rest of the plant.

No - don't put anything on it - it should heal by itself if it can and airflow will help.

The bit that's broken off can't be saved.
You may be able to take cuttings, but I've never tried.

Could it go in the ground when it's recovered? - it would be much happier there.
They grow very fast when they're happy, so any damage will soon be covered.
They're hungry so keep it fed during the growing season

The torn branch is not still attached. It has completely torn off.

OK I won't put anything on it.

It's a shame you say the broken part can't be saved. I may take cuttings and try growing umpteen Jasmines.

The plant is potted, on a roof terrace.

If anyone else has any other advice I'd be grateful. I will be dealing with it in the week ahead.

 

If you take cutting then do it straight away if you can, meanwhile put them in water. I would plant it in a bigger pot if you can't plant it in the ground.
