What are we doing in the garden 2024

We had quite a lot of butterflies early on, maybe May when we had a couple of weeks of good weather. Not many since but then the weather has been very up and down. Even though June was relatively dry it has been grey, windy and cool a lot of days.

 

Very few butterflies here compared to normal, but then we haven't had more than a handful of warm, sunny, dry afternoons, which is when they are usually fluttering about.

 

I haven't seen any butterflies here, even with Buddleia in full flower now.

You've missed a bit.

 

Very pleased to have picked our first harvest, blackberries, gooseberries and some 'volunteer' 2nd early potatoes. Freezing the first two down and eating the latter for dinner tonight.

Forgot to add that my Polka raspberries have grown much taller in their new bed than I anticipated, nearly as tall as me which makes netting them a bit of a problem. Was hoping to tie the net to the back of the shed and loop it right over to the top of the fence - wrong! Will have to wait and see if the birds get there first then think of something fast.

 

• No birds in the yew hedge at the front so that had a light trim today. Took longer to sweep up the bits!

Garden bin that was emptied on Tues is nearly full again. I had 4 buckets of stuff to go in (not including yew trimmings) and only one suitable for the compost bin as the others ivy, big bits and glossy leaves.

Not much else going on this week, and the bigger jobs die down slightly this time of year until hedge trimming late Summer.

 

Yes, it is sort of just chaos maintenance at this stage of the summer.

What did you decide on with the gravel, or have you not got that far yet?

Today, at the risk of sounding like The Fast Show's Jesse, I shall be mostly doing a bit more concreting, and painting- then putting more timber on the shed, if it's stays dry.

I still have to work out how to get around the nesting bees' entrance/exit at the front corner. Don't want to compromise them, but I think I can leave a suitable space, and just do that little bit of concrete, and attach the last plank, later on.
If they'd just made the nest at the other side of the shed.....sigh....
