Maybe that is the answer - save money by not paying for the security and then also save money on fares by letting the lorries bring them in. Better still, bring in even more revenue by fining the lorry drivers and operating companies for bringing them in.

    Win-win I say.

They did use to fine the drivers if I remember correctly.

Safe and legal routes is the answer to all this, apparently.
But unless you have a completely open door there will always be those that can't get in legally who will still come by boat.

My guess is there are some very high up people who are making a killing out of these boat crossings. Hence the continuation.

Maybe one way to solve it would be to say not a penny of general taxpayers' money can be spent on migrants who arrive in this manner. All the money needed (for security, processing, accommodation, etc) would come from a special tax on those worth more than, say, £25 million. As numbers increase and costs rise, so does the tax. I reckon the pressure to sort it would then materialise. And quite quickly.

The 'very high up people' are the French Government. We have paid them millions and they have done absolutely nothing to stop the flow. How many times have French police been filmed standing on the beach watching boats being filled with migrants?

I think the very high up people are lawyers and the courts.

International law stops us doing anything about it, and it needs changing but that wont happen because "they" wont let it happen, the whole set up regarding asylum is being abused by many of those coming here They all get lawyers and legal aid to fight their cases should it be decided they cant stay, and then there are the pressure groups who want us to just open our borders completely to the whole world.

Then we have the church getting involved and "converting" Muslims to Christians so that they cant be deported.
          Playing the system or what?

We spend far more on boat people than we have ever spent on our own homeless.

Many homeless would like a room on the Bibby Stockholm.

It could be anybody in a position of authority, how thick is the brown envelope, maybe even threats.

How much are these gangs making and how far up does it go. When those Vietnamese were found dead in the back of the truck, the report after the investigation said as many as 18,000 Vietnamese make it to Europe annually. They can pay anywhere between $10,000 and $50,000 to organised gangs to get them to Europe. So if you say on average they pay $30,000 per person, that's $540 million. A report by unicef in 2017, said that profits from human trafficking and forced labour was worth $150 billion annually. One of the problems has been, punishment, which is minimal compared to drugs dealers, human trafficking has always been seen as, low risk, high rewards.

The same can be said in other countries too. When the French re-introduced the wealth tax, ISF, in 2000 they said it did more harm than good. The introduction of the ISF apparently caused an annual fiscal shortfall of €7bn annually. Something like 60,000 millionaires left France between 2000-2017, losing revenue from income tax and VAT.

Since the referendum they reckon about 16,500 millionaires have left the UK, some are saying we could loose another 9,500 just in the next 12 months.

Yeah, Nigel Farage posted about millionaire migration on X today: "This is what happens when you raise taxes too high. The Tories did this and Labour are likely to make it worse."

It could be interesting to see what is going to happen in France - allegedly, their recently elected hard left lot are going to be pushing for a 90% rate of tax for the richest...

We were discussing new housing targets before the election and planning hold ups. This is a copy of a tweet from a Times columnist today that might be of interest and seems a good sign.

Sarah Sackman, the barrister from the 2024 intake Keir Starmer has just made solicitor general, is a) a Matrix Chambers colleague of attorney general Richard Hermer, and b) specialises in planning law. Useful given this government’s priorities…

I was reading today about another renter being given notice, as supposedly the overseas owner wanted to sell, only to find it was back on the rental market at a higher rent 2 months after they moved out. I hope they do something about this landlord\agent behaviour as well.

I fear that what will result is one of two things - either, the buck being passed to local councils to defend themselves over controversial planning applications that accrue mass objection from the local populace, or simply that the local populace will be ridden rough-shod over... of course, we know that the latter will only apply in areas where MP's and councillors don't live.

Labour are the absolute Kings at setting wholly unachievable targets for things and then when they don't get delivered, it is someone else's fault - so when it comes to housing, when they are not built, it will either be the fault of the councils for somehow not magically having loads of developers up their sleeves, or it will be the fault of developers for not wanting to build. The targets being set are, like those of the Conservatives, wholly unachievable.

I suppose it depends on how much the new owners paid compared to the previous owner. If the previous owner was in ownership for some considerable time, then the new owners could of well paid considerably more, more so if they needed to take out a mortgage at the current rates.

@gks, the overseas owner wasn’t actually selling they were just shifting the existing tenants out so as to put the property back out for rent at a higher price. I understand this is happening a lot and, if I have understood correctly, is to do with the threat of a ban on section 21 no fault evictions which was in the 2019 Tory manifesto but then the Renters Reform bill was shelved.

Also it begs the question as to whether we should allow overseas investors to buy property here to rent out.

I saw a funny article some years ago now, London new build flats were being marketed to I think it was Chinese buyers for this very thing, they were actually in Luton which the marketers sold to the unwitting overseas investors as the outskirts of London.

IMV, we should not. And that would be a relatively easy tweak to make.
