Quisqualis indica (Rangoon Creeper)

I received two seeds this morning (like Brazil Nuts) and want advice on germination please. @pete @CarolineL

 

Not something I have tried.
I'd probably soak the seed for 24hr and then sow in a peat based compost at around 80f.
Just keep moist.
You could try the plastic bag method but that might be messing around too much.

If nothing happens after about a month I'd probably file the shell of the seed and try again.

 

Thanks Pete. It is all very vague on the net. The seeds look just like Thevetia seeds. Is this how you germinated them? I haven't a clue how Sis germinated them (when in Germany) and she brought the 50cn high plants down to me.

 

I cant remember now but anything with a hard coating gets a soaking from me, sometimes even a filing of the shell before the soaking.
I'm guessing your normal temperatures will be ok for germination, if it was here I'd put them in the airing cupboard.

 

Okay, got them nicked and soaking. Airing cupboard ... that is called "ao ar livre" here ... outdoors!

I finally found a site that said carefully remove from outer shell or nick.

Come to think of it. it is rather like the Jatrophas.

 

Okay, got the seeds out of the pods and planted one upside down and the other the other way ...

 

Is that coal dust?

 

@pete has said it all @Victoria ! I am quite brutal sometimes about sanding down the outside of seeds as I am afraid that a deep nick might damage the growing point. I also was once told to soak in hydrogen peroxide (cycads I think).

 

It has something to do with my phone camera, J's old one. His new Smart one has crystal clear, sharp photos with true colour. I am a second-hand rose when it comes to techno equipment.

 

I germinated a couple of these back before the internet became a thing. I got them from somewhere abroad mid 80s. Germinated in about week around mid June....dead by Christmas!

Agree,I've kinda stopped doing it in recent years with things I know don't stand a chance.

 

Looking this morning, our compost is quite dark.

I got these seeds from France ... and sorry @noisette47 I meant to include you in this thread.

 

Just because I'm a serial plant killer, doesn't mean I'm going to stop doing it!

 

I haven't stopped killing things I've just stopped killing the ones that were doomed from day one.

 

Like @flounder and @pete I have killed more than I care to remember. I work on the principle that if I don't try, I'll never find that one tropical plant that can cope with my conditions! It's part of the fun!
