          They may look pretty but non-native species can have a negative effect on native ones, in just the same way as non-native, invasive plant species do on occasion.

            I don’t think that these macaws are allowed to live quite so freely as that. Apart from a quick trip over to the zoo to say hello to the captive macaws there, I’m pretty sure that they go home with their owner at night and don’t breed with other macaws.

            No different from me keeping, say, a couple of St Bernard dogs or Siamese cats.

              I didn't read the story so didn't realise they were just a few macaws. There is a problem in the South East, and possibly further afield, with parakeets which are now flying completely wild.
