Most countries don't seem to bother much about the size of their national debt.

The U.S. debt is 33 trillion but they are considered to be well off. That of France is 3.4 trillion, Germany 2.8 trillion, Italy 3.2 trillion, Brazil 14 trillion, Spain 1.6 trillion etc.

That doesn't mean to say we shouldn't be concerned about our debt but we shouldn't isolate it as a reason for doing things. There are many other concerns that affect our financial decisions.

Nooooo...there's a much easier target sitting like the proverbial duck, just waiting for the slaughter. 'Hey, why don't we freeze pensions of Brits living in EU countries'? Not only would it bring in a few ££££00000s but it would actually be quite a popular move amongst a certain section of the British public. After all, we had the WFP withdrawn on the basis of completely fabricated statistics, so why not? Mind you, those same Brit pensioners now have the right to vote again, which might give Labour pause for thought in a few years time.....

You do realise, don't you, that the Chancellor always reads the posts on GC? :hate-shocked:

          Lots of better ways.

The budget shortfall is quoted at £20bn (quite different to clearing national debt which is never going to happen) - the simple way is to increase tax on those in work. £60 per month for every single working person and there is your £20bn

Or, we could halt projects such as HS2 - there is an easy three or four years of the shortfall right there.

Net zero - how much is that folly costing us? By all means we should be doing what we can to improve, but to expect to do so in six years and bankrupt ourselves in the process.

Or, we could look at the NHS and make it operate within it's budget - start by looking at prescription drugs that are available at a retail level for less than they cost the NHS to purchase. If it is good enough to be on sale for use at retail level, it is good enough to use elsewhere. Layers of management that could be hacked. Put in hard-nosed managers from the private sector and give them a free hand to cut waste and it would happen.

Or, we could trim the foreign aid budget of near on £12 billion.

Or, we could trim the amount we are spending on Ukraine.

I think it is fabulous, personally. They've shown their hand within a matter of weeks and set themselves off on a road that is certain to piss off a huge chunk of voters that they've barely managed to hold onto. The upside is that they will hopefully be joining the Tories circling round the plughole and we will see the back of the lot of them. Time the whole thing was torn to shreds and started again from scratch.

But, @fairygirl, the gov can manage a very complicated child credit scheme. And HMRC has access to all pensioners' bank accounts and full details of any savings, etc, so I actually don't think it would be that hard to organise. I'd favour the full WFP going to anyone with income below £15k, and then half the amount going to those between £15-20k. Yes, there would still be a cut-off point, but it wouldn't slice quite so hard on those for whom fuel eats up a huge percentage of their money.

If they continue in this vein I don't see them lasting a full term.
Were these not the Robin Hood party, who were going to scrap non dom status and put VAT on private school fees, and take from the rich and give to the poor.

They seem to have got off on the wrong foot.

If they had waited and snuck these announcements in later in the year or next year after seemingly caning the rich first it might have gone down better.

Blaming the tories is not going work as most people are just going to think, so there's a black hole, isn't there always.
              Has been all my life.

I would love to believe a full reset could happen, but I'm certain it never will as the wealthy enjoy great privilege from the current set-up. They weren't touched in yesterday's statement, AFAIA.

What seriously bugs me is the waste of starting projects and then abandoning them. The A27 bypass at Arundel has been summarily axed, yet work on the project has been going on for yrs, costing goodness knows what for all the consultations and reports.

I think better off pensioners (like my parents, and hopefully myself one day in the not-too-distant future) shouldn't get the winter fuel payment, but the cliff-edge system is a problem.
Surely it's not beyond the wit of humankind to work out a taper system.
Of course it might not be that easy, and with personal pensions it would likely be possible to "work" the system by using income drawdown or some such thing. I suppose the crunch is, will it cost more in admin to work out who's eligible and who isn't than just to pay it to everyone. Probably easier/cheaper to piggyback on the pension credit because someone's already doing the eligibility checks for that. Perhaps the pension credit itself should be tapered because it's not just income top-up, it opens the door to other things like free TV license, as well as WFP in future.

Labour governments have always been good at cancelling projects that have already had millions spent on them.
                    It's traditional.

Of course there's also the issue of people who would be eilgible for pension credit but don't claim it, either from pride and because they're managing on what they have, or because they don't know how or even that they're eligible. My now-deceased elderly neighbour was one of the latter, until someone from one of the charities (I think) came and helped her with it (I didn't know until after the fact when she told me how much extra she was getting, or I'd have offered to help her with it myself). There might be a flood of new applications if no WFP pushes people from just managing into not managing.

I know one thing for sure, almost everyone I speak to is sick to the back teeth of seeing how this country is falling apart, things not working and a complete lack of law and order. You've only got to look at the events of this past couple of weeks to see that this country is something of a powder-keg at the moment - indeed, the only surprise is that the events of yesterday didn't ignite it.

It is the politics of envy - - the screeches from the far left are that pensioners are rich, mostly because they own homes that are work a few hundred grand and those younger folks cannot afford a house. The real cause is twofold - firstly a severe lack of housing over many decades (at least four, getting on for five) and a population that is increasing - knowing that they cannot solve this issue within a parliamentary term, the answer is not to take any radical steps that will run on for 15-20 years or more, but instead to deflect away to those who have worked hard and managed to buy their own home. The fact that the owner could be living in that home, on their own, with no other income than a state pension is beyond them.

National minimum wage for an adult is now £11.44 per hour, or £434.72 weekly, £22605.40 per annum. State pension is £218.15 weekly or £11343.80.

But hey. let's lob a 22% pay rise at the doctors as our first move and expect people to believe that it won't cause a ripple with all sorts of other industries wanting the same.

I wouldn't put Rachel Reeves in charge of a restaurant bill.

Correction, it wasn't foreign aid that was near on £12bn - it was foreign climate aid:

They questioned her this morning on the subject and asked if taking something like 1.4 billion from pensioners and giving 9 odd billion to public service worker's actually added up.

When you put it into that context 1.4 billion saving is a pretty small amount especially as she keeps going on about a 22 billion black hole.
Apparently it's all Liz Truss's fault.
