Onion Growing 2024

My sets are looking good, others less so. Stil 90% upright

 

My red onions look as though they are ready, leaves dying down, but they are smaller than usual. Think they were short of water while we were away. Don't think handy man watered as much as he said he did.

 

I suspect it may also be caused by the cool temperatures and excess rain this spring @Busy-Lizzie

I planted shallots and garlic late last autumn @Busy-Lizzie and harvested them when their tops had died down. The garlic bulbs are well formed into cloves but much smaller than usual and at least 50% of the shallots are too small to bother peeling and cooking so will be kept for re-planting this autumn.

Have you folded them over @Busy-Lizzie ? Don't grow them here, but when we did we used to do this at the start of July, leave them a week or two and then harvest. They did seem to bulk up quite well in that period.

 

The leaves have folded over by themselves.

 

I would go down the row(s) and make sure they are bent over 10-15cm above soil level and folded in same direction allowing sun to hit the bulb.

 

A few of my Reds have started going to seed, not my usual seeds this year, but I've lifted them all out to harden and dry a bit, Red Baron are ok, but not quite as good as my usual Mammoth Red seeds, will order new stock for next year. We will have enough, but this hasn't been a bumper year.

 

Not huge, but not too bad, they should do for two of us for the winter
