Tomato Growing 2024

Definitely plenty of tome left to crop. On mine, I usually expect to get fruit from most if not all August flowers.

 

It depends where you live surely?

 

I've found that if there's sunshine (or a greenhouse if there's a chance of rain), and some netting to keep the flies off, they seem to sun dry effectively. The thing I learnt this year is that if they don't dry fully in one day - put them in the fridge overnight in a sealed container to stop them rehydrating or going mouldy.
It does seem weird to be putting something in the fridge in the middle of sun-drying, but it works for me!

Yes of course, I always take into consideration a posters location when reading replies. I guess I assume we all do. There are so many variables in gardening,if we tried to caveat all our posts we’d be writing essays

 

Oh dear! That sounds as if I will be picking my paltry crop at Christmas.

 

Why oh why won't my tomatoes hurry up and ripen, I'm just picking a paltry few at a time, not enough to make anything for the freezer!

 

Your weather looks down, and the forecast does not look too good assuming those toms are outside?

 

I've just realised why my tomato crop is looking so poor this year.

I bought a dehydrator in anticipation of a huge crop like we've had in previous years.

Looks like it'll be staying in its box!

I already put the cross on this season. Just waiting for what's set to ripen, then I pull plants out.
A few tomatoes per plant - not good at all. But at least each plant produced something to taste.
Delicious: Xanadu Green Goddess, Sveta from Italy, Tirnovskiy Rozoviy.
Barry's Crazy Cherry and Flaschen Tomaten performed not that bad, but I expected more from Barry tastewise.
Every year I used to think my tomatoes didn't get much sun, and because of that taste wasn't very intense, but after I discovered three WOWs this year, I understand that not all the varieties have that intense taste.
From miniature varieties only 1 yellow tasted good. I think I won't bother to grow them again.
I have some shop bought tomatoes stuck in the kitchen, and after any of mine they appear not to have taste at all.

 

To be honest I would have thought your climate would be ideal for growing tomatoes.
Are you growing your usual varieties?

Its strange that you are struggling, but surely you get about another month or 6 weeks more growing season down there compared to the UK.
