What are we doing in the garden 2024

Opposite problem here @fairygirl It's drizabone here and set to get to 30C in the shade today and 37 tomorrow so we'll get an early start on lifting the front gates off their posts so I can get to the rusty bit at the bottom before carrying on painting them. After that, more potting on and re-potting of my treasures and gathering them into one spot so OH can just turn on the sprinkler to water them while I'm away for 8 days.

If I give him a rota and timings they and the tomatoes watered by seep hose will be fine. In theory.

 

I couldn't cope with that weather at all @Obelix-Vendée . Not designed for it at all, and any real heat [and that's much lower than 30 degrees!] just has me inside. There's a few folk on this forum who have that type of climate. Not for me at all !
It's thankfully been a cooler, more 'normal' summer here, although still hot on the sunny days, but now becoming autumnal, which suits me better, especially when we get those cool, clear nights and the sun's pleasant to sit in.
Autumn's definitely been starting later and later in recent years though.

You did a huge amount of work on that property @shiney . You deserve a wee rest now though

 

I removed the pea plants and wildflowers.

 

I'm not complaining @fairygirl as we had such a cool, grey, wet winter and spring and it's good to have some sun. The heat is bearable as it's usually not muggy like I remember it being in my youth in north west England and later in London and then Belgium.

Having the right clothing helps - cotton or linen andnothing tight fitting and when it does get too hot we just migrate indoors with the shutters down to keep it cool.

I've been busy with pots again this morning plus painting the gates and more potting while the paint dries.

Oh yes, and clearing up the debris.

 

Having a cuppa while more paint dries. One gate hung again but will need more spraying on the panel at the bottom, as will the other when it's hung. Had to take them off to get the bottoms and undersides of horizontal bars done.

OH has helped me plant a large star jasmine that was struggling in its pot and growing in such a way that I've decided it will be good on our bank between 2 levels. I'll just train new growth across the bank and peg it.

More pots after that. All muck and paint, me.

I leave hedge trimming to OH @RowlandsCastle. He needs the practice. He also gets to clear up my debris when I'm pruning and weeding cos he's in charge of compost heaps.

 

Wife was pruning something or other (a bush that had pink flowers), when she found a small conifer growing underneath.
Yes, small - about a foot tall. So she's left it for me - as if I wasn't having enough fun trying to sort out several holly bushes that are growing amongst hedges, where they have no place to be.

 

More of that to do tomorrow.

 

Watering and picking blueberries and black berries.

 

Today I’ve been doing some extra cleaning up after the hedge man trimmed the monster laurel hedge which is in my neighbour’s garden but imposes on mine. It’s about 12 feet tall in places now. I can’t reach the top anymore and I’m not risking a ladder on a sloping bank .

I retrieved the leaves and twigs that have fallen since the trimming and pushed some of them back into my neighbour’s garden under the fence so that he can benefit from the mulch .

I then jet washed the steps, pruned an ivy growing up a half obelisk against the fence as it was getting a bit too adventurous, cut both lawns and watered all the flagging perennials. I’ve planted too many Heleniums this year, they need regular watering in my sandy soil when it gets slightly hot! I may replace some of them with more grasses next year as they’re much less demanding.

After four hours, at the hedge man’s rate, I would have earned £200!

Thats mind-bogglingly awesome !
Bravo , Sir , I take my hat off to you ; that structure is on a different level , mind you , a good part of my structure was nowhere near level .
Any chance of a current picture of the same spot for comparison?
