... the long-awaited GROOVED FRONT ROLLER from Allett finally reached the home market. It is beautifully engineered in solid stainless steel and very easy to fit.

The difference in cut is absolutely amazing and, should you wish for such a finish, it will give your lawn the immaculate look of Wimbledon’s Centre Court!

Thanks for posting. I'm always up for improvement on my wonderful back lawn. I'm guessing it will also fit the atco balmoral 17s.

Having said that. Knowing allett, it probably costs about 4 times more than you would expect it to.

I am glad this addition to the Allett range interests you; it really helps the ten-blade cylinder attack the grass in a completely different way.

I am impressed that you still have your old Atco; when mine was declared a write-off, I switched to Allett partly because I had some of the cassettes and, as you surmised, they were compatible with the new machine. Your guess regarding pricing is also quite sharp but, unlike some of the machine’s components, the grooved roller is made of stern stuff, very heavy, very solid … When you think of what they charge nowadays in restaurants, theatres, concert halls, etc., I would say this is excellent value and will last forever.

Thank you. Decades ago, in the days they were still using bents and fescues, I entered Centre Court on day one, when the surface had not yet been played on; it was an inexplicable shock, a veritable revelation (I shall never understand why) and that first impression has never left me. When, a few years ago, playing a musical instrument became too frustrating, I switched my devotion to greenkeeping … without realising that this new discipline was going to be even more difficult! But then, as someone once said, We choose to go to the moon, and do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard …

What you say is very encouraging, many thanks; I have written elsewhere on the Forum that I was going to rip the whole thing up and start again from scratch. Mrs LawnAndOrder persuaded me not to and I will opt for a serious autumn renovation instead.

What you see above is the result of a very unusual amount of rain. Other times, I have extremely variable results, fluctuating from better or worse, as the two photographs below illustrate, and all seemingly beyond my control; my lawn needs drastic soil improvement as well as defences against squirrels, foxes, poa annua, chafer grubs, voracious ants, weeds … you wouldn’t have time to read the full list I wouldn’t have time to write!

An interest in tennis (I assume :)), a love of music (which instrument, may I ask), and a keen gardener. A trio of enthusiasms I can definitely relate to, @LawnAndOrder. :dbgrtmb:

At the beginning of the tournament, or after the men's singles final?

The instrument: classical guitar. Try it at your peril. Here is a magisterial example (alas, not played by me) ... the relevance to a gardening forum ? In parts, you’ll hear grass seedlings surreptitiously growing … and then, in the middle of the night, behind your back, the attacks of nature’s creatures … and then, the repairs the following day … in an everlasting cyclic attempt to establish balance.

Take your pick, I've given above examples of both!

That's slightly modern for my tastes (Bach is more my genre), though clearly requires fiendish skill, @LawnAndOrder. Love the idea of music representing sprouting seedlings.

Everything is relevant here, because we all bring our other selves along. Imagine a Venn diagram with gardening in the centre and lots of other overlapping circles all round the edge and branching off in all directions. That's us!

Fair enough ... you get used to it, though, and it becomes quite marvellous ... meanwhile, here goes (sadly, here again, not played by me), an incontrovertible example of excellence all round!: (if you don't believe what you are hearing, watch him play it on YouTube's Seville Concert, whose link the forum would not accept)
