Its very on and off here this year really.

 

Earlier in the year was bad but come july its been decent. 2 of the varieties had a lot of mildew but "Telepathy" f1 took it like a champ. My "Delistar" did very poorly, better suited for a greenhouse perhaps.
"Santana" gherkin had 0 Mildew and performed better in the colder weather, but not as good as the pumpkins did.

 

We have over the last 2 weeks been picking fabulous figs before the birds get them. Not a lot in one go but enough for us to enjoy. First time in 3 years that we have had a harvest.

I have been growing a patch of rocket, which grew very well and tasted great, trouble is something else - insect sized - thought so too and I could never find any leaves to pick that weren't more hole than leaf. So today I pulled it all up and weeded the area, I'm going to sow some Chard seeds instead.

 

If it was flea beetle or caterpillars, enviromesh will keep them out.
I have now made a sealed frame with ground cover fabric duck taped to the bottom and enviromesh tightly draped over the top because it's the only way to keep out slugs, root fly, cabbage white butterflies etc. I hope. At least seedlings won't get eaten. I am getting desperate this year.

Wild and salad rocket is good to sow from about mid July as flea beetles are mainly a late spring and early/mid summer problem.so you'll get less damage. They'll grow until next year, although wild rocket shuts down over winter, salad rocket will keep growing a bit if there's mild weather. Should get good harvests in spring, especially if you can give them a bit of protection from the worst of the weather . Wild rocket can be perennial I think but I've always grown it as an annual

 

I had pasta with the sauce made from home-grown tomatoes and basil.

 

My single weedy mini melon"/gherkin has miniscule fruits forming. It is in a pot in the conservatory as I daren't risk putting it outside or in the greenhouse to fatten up as I am convinced it would be munched. My single squash plant in the greenhouse is still tiny and producing only male flowers.
I have not had a single blackcurrant, redcurrant, raspberry or blueberry this year.

 

Sweetcorn in full flow at the moment, it's been the best year for blackberries for quite some time.
