The vehicle is illegal in what way? You say one had no number plate but it seems you have reported more than one.
The riots weren't against the police, they were against everybody. People attacked, businesses looted and massive levels of damage done. Which do you think would be more important in terms of police action.
Leaving the riots aside, an illegally parked vehicle isn't going to be high priority unless it is also causing a major obstruction. If it's not taxed it isn't a matter for police, report it to DVLA. GOV.UK - Vehicle details

I live in a fairly rural village. 8 years ago, someone trashed my car overnight. It was just one of 14 vehicles parked along both sides of the street. The rear window had been smashed by a brick and every panel/roof and bonnet had been sprayed with paint stripper. No other vehicle had been touched. When I reported it, the response from the police was simply along the lines of " these people are such a nuisance aren't they ? I'll give you a Crime No. for your insurance claim ". When I tried to take it further, I was asked if I had " perhaps upset another road user recently".
At least there are no riots here so something to be thankful for - unless you count escaped sheep

Thankfully the only damage that has occurred to our car at our property is by the wife driving into our garage without folding the wing mirrors in first.
And to think we had a discount on our insurance because the car was kept off road AND garaged when not in use at home!!

As with almost all rules and systems that we have, they have developed and altered over the years until they become virtually unmanageable and contradictory because they don't remove the outdated things nor look at everything else holistically. It's not really the fault of the officials/politicians as we do not have a method of doing all this that could be done with the personpower (am I being a modern man? :heehee:) and money available.

I'm sure we can spend all day picking the things that are wrong or could be improved.

I want the potholes fixed around here.

My car was vandalised overnight once. Some clown thought it was a great idea to smash my rear window with a food recycling bin. Thankfully it was empty at the time. When I reported it I was asked if there was any CCTV footage. When I said there was none I was informed that no further action would be taken as there was zero chance of getting anybody. At least they were honest about that. Police resources are stretched very thin and have been for years. Like it or not, they have to prioritise.

I think the problem is that quite literally nothing now works as it should, consistently, across the country. Agencies of the government that on one hand wish to dictate what we do in our daily lives on the other hand are wholly failing in their responsibilities.. worse still, nobody is ever held responsible. I'd wager that nobody could actually name one public service that does what it should.

Pressure/duress from whom? The others involved in the rioting or the police? As there was apparently plenty of video evidence of the actions, there would be no need for the police to put pressure on any of those who have been jailed so far. I really don't understand why those who are caught on video should get any reduction in sentence for an early guilty plea.
In this specific instance this guy presumably had legal representation who would have put forward the medical evidence of his disabilities.

Lawyers/Police - mostly lawyers looking make a fast buck by getting them to plead guilty on the promise that it would give them the best chance of a lower sentence... only, the judiciary have been instructed to go in with their hob-nail boots on.

You'd have hoped that he had suitable legal representation, but if he had a lawyer wanting to get clients through like sausages in a sausage factory (flat fee for each case?) then would that lawyer really have done his best?

Not saying that they don't deserve punishment, because they absolutely do - - some of the sentences just seem a bit OTT, particularly in light of the fact that one of Labour's early releases (brought to light by Norman Brennan) was a guy who killed someone else with a machete, sentence to 28 months in jail and was released after 6 months. I don't know about you, but a murderer getting out after only 6 months doesn't sit well with me.

EDIT - it will be interesting to see what sentencing is handed down to the Labour MP that was done for incitement and of course Huw Edwards.

By pure chance I saw some of the live sentencing on BBC News. The judge explained in full the reduction in prison time given for an early guilty plea, so it isn't a case of the judiciary going in with hobnail boots. Long sentences already seem to be having a deterrent effect as the rioting and looting has dropped right off. 28 months for murder seems ludicrously short but I don't know the case.
I don't agree with the early release just because jails are overcrowded. I firmly advocate 'If you can't do the time, don't do the crime'. If they had to pack them half a dozen to a cell I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I agree wholeheartedly, especially on the count of early release. I've never agreed with it and even less so now.

Like it or not, we have a very serious problem on our streets and we are going to need prison spaces and strong sentences to get a grip on it.

Unless the reasons why we have a problem on our streets are addressed, putting a few hundred in jail will do nothing at all to improve things in the medium to long term.

                    Bring back hanging.
Might not be a deterrent but it would stop repeat offenders, free up a few prison spaces and save the tax payer a lot of money.

In this day and age, surely there is a more humane way of disposing of known, proven murderous criminals? I'm right behind the principle of not wasting money on keeping them alive, it's just the method that needs modernising.

They could start by releasing all the people who have been in jail due to that ludicrous indefinite sentencing process, that was binned over a decade ago. The problem is - they didn't address it retrospectively, so there are folk still in jail, often for 8 or 10 times the length of the original sentence they should have had, as they were for minor offences, and only arranted a couple of years at most. Many have killed themselves because of it too.
