Did something similar with a knife in hold luggage. My rucksack got emptied at Southampton airport, enroute to Alderney.
Those were the days when OH and I put half of our clothes in one another's luggage.
Her underwear, my luggage - red face, and questioning looks!!

 

I still have an unopened BA sleeping kit, containing eye patches, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste - from 2010.

My most recent flight was ... 1991!

 

My first flight was on a Britannia, which had propellers, and we went to Singapore. Took ages. When we returned we were on a Comet and that was a bit faster. In those days (1960s) you casually walked across the runway to board. The good old days!

 

My last flight was 1995.
I dont think I could put up with all the chaotic hassle at airports these days.

It all just looks so disorganised .

They still do this on the flights to and from the Isles of Scilly.
This is to enable the authorities to determine which guest house or hotel is feeding their visitors the best. Or so I'm reliably informed, by the owner of the place we've always stayed in.

 

Did they have outside toilets?
