I have just read on the BBC website that 25% of children beginning school this year will still be in nappies.

Not been potty trained by age 4 or 5.

Apparently 33% of their teachers’ time will be spent in nappy changing rather than teaching them anything.

You'd think the cost of the nappies would be enough motivation to get them potty trained, wouldn't you?

My first thought was, at what age will they graduate from nappies to potties?

I'm not remotely surprised by that.
My sister was a child minder, and it was common for the children she looked after to be completely untrained, even when they were pre school age of 4 or so. I don't know if parents are lazy or ignorant, or both, but she'd have them sorted within a couple of weeks if they were coming to her regularly, and many of those were, because the mothers were working full time.
I worked in a Playgroup for some years, and we had some which were a bit iffy, but they were only 3 years old, so that was to be expected, and they were only with us for a couple of hours, as opposed to a whole day.

Unless there's a medical reason [my older daughter had that problem] there's no excuse for it once they start school.

It's another indicator that generally people are better off these days than we were a generation ago. I know many are saying the opposite but I don't see it.

It is not a new problem. Over 30 years ago I stood with the Head of an Infant School and watched as a mother wheeled a child up in a pram, removed its dummy and sent it inside. I commented on it and the Head said, "Worse than you think, he is going to Junior school next term"

I read that article, but couldn't see the logic in the claim that Covid was partly to blame. Surely many parents were working from home so should have had more time to toilet train their little darling. I also remember reading an interview with a woman who said she had better things to do than toilet train her child. She said that was the childminder's job.

Lazy parenting, let the school do it.

It's down to the schools to refuse to take them.

We saw an example of a dog walker taking things one step further when we were out for a walk today. They had bagged the mess and, unlike some, the bag hadn't just then been thrown into the bushes. This person had actually tied the bag to a tree branch!
