Latest Moan From You and Me 2024

It's all relative though - the weather. We're used to wet summers here wher I am, but this year it's been warmer, which always helps, and June and July were pretty good, if mostly cloudy.
August is often a better month in terms of dryness, especially the latter half - when the kids go back to school.
My younger daughter's birthday was on Friday, and the weather is usually much better for her b'day than for her older sister [ hers is on 4th July] but it was the other way round this year.
I can still remember all the kids looking miserable in their summer frocks outside playing party games on her big sis's b'day....
It's a hard school here - but they needed to get used to it, so it was my civic duty

What I call hot or cold will also be quite different from what others call hot or cold too, and averages in terms of weather mean you'll obviously need to have days/weeks/months that are higher or lower, in order to have those averages. Even in our hottest, driest summer on record here [last year] we had more rain than most areas in the SE of England, and also many eastern areas generally.
It's certainly been a bit topsy turvy though, as the east of Scotland [much drier] has been getting our weather over the last year. That's been very difficult for farmers, as that's the side for all the arable farming. Landscape is totally different east to west, but there's no doubt there are changes.

My latest moan however is, last night when I did the shopping. At what point do parents think it's acceptable for their young child [maybe about 4] to ride around the supermarket on a bike? The other one was on one of those things with a handle. That's ok, but the older kid should have been on the seat in a bigger trolley, or walking - with one of the parents holding his hand.
Mind you, after the pair of bams on an electric scooter, a couple of weeks ago in another shop, I'm not totally surprised.

 

We Brits moan about the weather so much. Too cold, too wet, too dry, too hot, too much snow, and so on.
I was out yesterday, and I hate getting wet - but the garden needed the rain (thankfully I mowed what is the lawn, the day before).

If only we could look at the positives each day!
Yes, the rain messed up loads of events - that's British weather.
I've been on very wet holidays - and moaned about having to be out in the rain. I need to adjust MY thinking.

It was very wet here yesterday. More October than August.

I do like the variety of English weather though, and the lack of extremes (generally speaking). It does make outdoor events hit or miss though.

I despair! There are thousands of children at risk. A middle class child days from his 16th birthday, on holiday with a 16 yr old pal, with supportive family constantly in touch and plenty of money, is not one of them and does not need social services oversight.

 

My moan this morning is, after reading a news article, a University is advising, nay telling, the pupils to stop using the terms mum and dad. They should be referred to as a Guardian or a Carer. I am a Mother, full stop.

 

Universities should not be telling students what to think, full stop. Education is about learning to think for yourself.

 

Yeah well let's hope its right, might ripen the melons .
I just think we get so much rain and damp weather for three quarters of the year, a few months of dry warm weather should be allowed and enjoyed while we have it.
It was 33c on the 10th Sept last year so not giving up hope just yet.

 

Hmm, think you might be in for disappointment on that one, @pete. It's not often we get a damp, cool summer and then a tropical Sept. Usually unseasonally warm stuff then follows an overall hot summer. Still, with global warming and all, you never know.

I think too many people try to find patterns in what is basically a total random thing, namely the weather.
It is random in this part of the world anyway.

Actually the highest temperature of the year, last year, was in September, and I can remember that more than once happening.

 

It has deffo been a damp, cool summer here. Last yr we had some scorchio bits in July, but I haven't had to resort to my emergency hot-weather clothing once this yr. Nor have I ditched the duvet for just a sheet on any night.

 

May have to eat my words. @pete, your Sept heatwave could be on the way. Unless, of course, the forecasters are exaggerating (surely not?) or just plain wrong (unthinkable)!
