Tomato Growing 2024

I'm almost at that point of adding toms to my basket on the website! The cherry/plum types suit me better, so a couple of packets of new seed are just the job.
It'll be good to hear your views on the taste of the Toddler one @JWK.

 

It’s been a poor year for my toms. Red cherry produced about a dozen and some were just turning red this week, so they’ve been picked and ripening on shelf. My Tumbling Toms were very slow too but I’ve snipped off all flowers now so the toms that are there can swell and ripen. I’m not sure they will now there’s not much sun.

 

I was very happy with the varieties I planted - Outdoor Girl, Veranda Red and Minibel. The Minibel were old seed and I wasn't expecting much from them, but I got several nice plants. All varieties set plenty of fruit. Still lots of seed left from the OG and VR so will be sowing them again next year.

I've been self sufficient in Toms for at least a month now but still have plenty left to ripen. Don't think the current weather's going to help much though ...

I only did one Tumbling Tom this year - it's not done that well - I've probably had about 10 ripe fruits so far with another 2 or 3 to go.
To be fair, I think it was more down to me as I left it outside during Spring and it got a bit chilly. They've usually done well in previous years. Black Krims all finished now and just waiting for the remaining Sungold and Choc. cherry to finish. Have had a lot off both of those varieities despite the late start. All grown in GH this year.

 

Good grief @Garrett that's a crop! My plants have been pretty poor - but in Carmarthenshire we've had another awful summer. I accidentally planted most of my Sungold outside and they've got blighted. The purple beef Cherokee has been fine except for slug damage, and chocolate pear ok, but flavour hohum.

 

I didn't get anywhere with the Tumbling Toms when I tried them. Only one germinated, and it didn't do well, which put me off. Haven't tried them since.
I'm quite pleased with the crop of Sungolds I have this year, albeit a bit later than usual.

That's a lovely crop @Garrett. Hope they taste as good as they look.

 

Yet again my outdoor tomatoes are blight-affected. The greenhouse ones are fine but soooo slow to ripen this year. It seems that others are having the same problem.
I’ve grown Big Daddy, Black Russian and Cuor di Bue in the green house, the last one has been a fantastic cropper. The tiddly ones in the photo are Sungold. Tomato and apple and tomato and mango and chilli chutney made from the rescued green ones off the blighted plants, shan’t bother with outdoor ones next year. My chill Cayenne plants are only just now producing fruit, they’ve grown to a couple of feet. Hungarian Hot Wax chillies all produced exactly three enormous fruits on short plants then started producing more flowers. Will have to bring them back into the house shortly, summer seems to have suddenly vanished!

 

I grew chocolate pear for the first time, CarolineL.
Two plants - rather different tastes! One fairly bland and uninspiring, the other really quite tasty.
I need to remember to save some seeds from the good one - not many left now.

 

I am amazed with the crop i am getting outside with 2 beef tomato plants -30 large tomatoes at least 8 ounces each and the monster in the picture , which does not truly show how big it is , as it fits in my 2 palms cupped together is the biggest - 24 ounces or 650 grams. The taste is excellent especially on the bbq.

 

That is certainly a Whopper @Robert Bowen - which variety of beefsteak is it ?
