Surprised anyone is having new water tanks, a condensing combi boiler was my last choice, although where we live now we have no mains gas, I wouldn't want oil and as we are in a small bungalow now, don't really need to install a gas cylinder. Our multi fuel burner warms pretty much the whole house in winter.

A combi would have been more expensive for me, and meant ripping out the shower and tiling in the bathroom as a cost on top. I did look into it, but even the gas engineers I consulted concluded a conventional one would be better.

What is a multi fuel boiler if it doesn't run on gas or oil.

Aren’t combi boilers more susceptible to breaking down than system boilers?

I assumed it's the other way round, hence why we took away all the 3 tanks. Less pipework, valves and connections. Plus our loft cold tank always seemed unhygienic to me, now all our cold water is straight from the mains, unadulterated by dead pigeons (fawlty towers reference)

Less pipework maybe ... but no water at all if the mains supply gets cut off. Whereas I would have a whole tank to use at leisure.

            Swings and roundabouts.

One thing I don't like about modern boilers is the pump taking away condensation build-up, which can activate at any time, day or night. :th scifD36: Light sleepers beware!

Only ever had an indirect water heated system via a 20 yr old gas boiler.
BiL worked for British gas for years before moving over to Transco the gas supplier around here before he retired, I think its SGN now.

He has always told me combi boilers are a nightmare, regarding reliability, I dont know how true that is but they fitted them in all the housing associations houses around here and they always break down in cold weather, apparently, always heating company vans outside when it gets cold.

Its been more settled here today, with good long sunny periods and no showers, wonderful, still cold in the shade but much better overall.

A chilly start to the day but plenty of sun since, and am expecting a drop off in temp soon, as it’s the last hour of any sun on the house.

Yes but how many times does that happen I thought. Sod's Law it happened twice since we had the tanks removed, each time the water was off for a few days. It is awful when you turn the tap on and nowt comes out and you realise you can't even have a cuppa. We survived on bottled water and flushing the loos with a bucket from the butt.

It's those pesky condensate pipes freezing up that is the main cause of the first frost 'breakdowns'. Another common thing is losing pressure, knowing which taps to fiddle with to re-pressurize is not obvious. Yes I would say combis are more complex. It's a bit like modern cars where all sorts of extra valves and electronics are fitted to cut down emissions, fine when they work but a nightmare when they go wrong.

We don't have a pump, ours drains by gravity so no noise. I suppose it depends where it gets installed and if a suitable drain is nearby. Father-in-law couldn't have a condensing boiler fitted in his flat for this reason, the only place to drain was a communal cast iron soil stack, and no company would take the risk of drilling into it. They still sell non-condensing boilers for these situations.

Sorry seem to be going off topic ...

Mine has to drain up into the loft and over to the soil pipe. It was a fiddle to install, certainly.

Has been fab here today. Beautifully sunny and still. Perfect. :blue thumb:

Well, to draw this boiler sub-thread to an end, I am glad we still have our old boiler having read all your posts.

Today it was hot in the sun, but rather chilly in the shade. It should be dry tomorrow too. Chilly tonight.
