@shiney, what will happen if your old meter breaks and non-smart ones are no longer available?

I don't want the new non-landline phone system either. Currently, landline calls are private in that they are not stored by providers. Once all calls are over the internet, any conversation can be recreated. Privacy will be a thing of the past.

 

I believe there are places where smart meters are not possible so I think old style meters will always be available in the future.
No mobile phone signal is just one reason.

Re smart meters, in poor mobile reception areas I thought they could put a booster in. Mind you, here, we often get no mobile reception at all so boosting nothing gives you nothing?

Re this new VOIP being forced on us, we've had our first email from BT back in February. My concern is security - we do telephone banking sometimes (it saves putting the computer on) and of course you put your pin in on the phone. Can that be intercepted under this VOIP? Does it work under VOIP?

So many questions about this change that will only be answered by actually experiencing it.

 

I use a phone app for banking and that involves putting in a pin number so I would think it's pretty much the same, it all uses the Internet.

Actually rather than a wonder of modern science it's more a result of capitalism; as it was cheaper to dump the waste PFOA into the environment than to dispose of it properly.

Now that is an interesting qu. Is this VOIP system coming through a home's broadband (which can be password protected) or an open mobile network? If the latter, anything you do via it would be the same as standing at a mobile hotspot and linking in presumably ... which is much less secure. I don't know the answer to this, but it is probably telling that we have so little information about it all and downsides have been minimised.

 

The VOIP will be through the router. BT give you a new router Smart Hub 2 I think is the latest. That may only work with BT broadband though. Hubby wants his own router which shows what piece of equipment is accessing the Internet at a particular moment in time. At the moment I don't know enough about security for VOIP telephone banking. It's yet another subject to look into and hubby understands better than me (although he gets fed up of the changes to everything- time wasters).

 

If that was the case there would be billions of transactions every day all being intercepted by criminals.
