Avoiding things manufactured in China is very tricky. Even John Lewis gets a lot of its stuff from there.

And any smart phone could potentially become an explosive device, as I understand it.

I know someone who found their mobile phone getting hot and went into the O2 shop in the high street. They opened up the phone and were told that there was a problem with the battery and it was expanding. So they asked for a new battery and were told that they could give them a new one but can't take the old one as it could explode and they don't have a 'safe box' to put it in.

They recommended the small, privately owned phone repair shop two doors away who did have a 'safe box'. That was business for the small shop (battery was cheaper as well) and a worried person was very satisfied.

What are supposed to do with dangerous phone batteries?

          Hi,

Just buy a Citroen 2CV and get a medal if caught speeding; both our 2CV's we owned years ago were brilliant cars having an impressive payload with the rear and passenger seats removed. We now own a CLEAN DIESEL Skoda Yeti it's the Adblue model with the silly automatic stop/start function which is the only thing I dislike about the car and it gets switched off for every journey.

Our Yeti 2.0L diesel attracts £35 per year road tax so if it's so clean why all the dash to close our car industry forcing unwanted EV's on people who don't want one; cheaper and better for the environment make all diesels Adblue?

Who would want to spend £100,000 on a car that will be scrap once the battery has degraded. Great for the environment in years to come isn't it. Our Yeti will still be running when EV's bought today will be scrap? We should have a choice what to buy with our money assuming we'll have any money left by the way this worst government in the history of mankind is taxing us.

          Kind regards, Col.

Take them to the battery disposal boxes at supermarkets or local tip.

Makes you wonder how safe those bins are as you don't know what types of battery people are putting in them.

@ViewAhead I expect any electronic device can explode. The point here is potential malfeasance at manufacture or distribution point so they can be exploded on command.

As for avoiding China, yes, it's hard. I check labels and don't buy. Took me ages to find a new potato masher that wasn't made in China but I did. Ditto some solar powered lights. Found some German ones after a lot of searching.

i don't buy from TEMU either - it's a Chinese site deliberatey undercutting EU and USA prices, even at a loss, so that it drives out the competition and can then corner the market with its own tat and higher prices.

Yes, smart phones could individually explode at whim ... but they also could potentially be primed to do so during manufacturer, like pagers. That is more lethal because many could be triggered at once. Maybe we don't need the expense of nuclear weapons after all, given how many people obligingly carry smart phones. ;)

Not my problem ... unless I happened to be in a supermarket at the designated explosion time. :)

As I understand it the phones and pagers that blew uo in Lebanon had had small amounts of explosives put into them.

Dodging Chinese stuff is not easy, even stuff from other countries contain parts made in China.

I think the exploding pagers were unwise. Not because these were not effective, but because proving the possibility of weaponising them existed might give certain nefarious groups ideas.

Exploding personal devices is not a new idea. The idea was to show the Israelis can reach their targets anywhere and create fear.

@Obelix-Vendée I think you will find it very difficult to avoid buying anything of Chinese manufacture, although I share your concerns. The vast majority of the components required for Li-on batteries come from China.

I believe that with both the pagers and walkie talkies the Israelis actually manufactured them somewhere in Europe having bought rights to the name and design off the original company. They mounted 10 to 20 grams of military explosive (Semtex or similar) on the board. Then supplied them to Hezbollah, detonation was with a text message.
Lithium batteries and also nickel cadmium rechargeables tend to overheat and catch fire rather than explode.
The first place I worked used to test Ni/Cd battery packs by breaking samples with a hammer or driving a large nail through the lot and checking that they didn't overheat. That was when work was fun.

It also completely destroyed the communications networks being used by Hamas, Hezbola etc, as they don't use traditional mobile phones in case they were hacked. All of the nonsense over the past year, starting last October on the 7th, has been orchestrated by Iran in my opinion, but that is a topic for another thread.

If ever there was reasons not to buy an EV, that has to be the US and in particular the areas of Florida etc that have just taken a thumping with hurricane Helene.

                              Hi,

Regarding electric cars; the UK is spending £B,s of tax payers money pushing electric cars and ULEZ etc; what happens to our clean air; do we retain it in the UK after all it's cost us a great deal of money?

                              Here's a bit more government lunacy;

                              Kind regards, Col
