    Hi all,

I grew some zinnia this year (zinnia marylandica), I believe it's a F1 hybrid. I've started to collect some seed from them. RHS says zinnia don't usually go to seed in the UK, I don't know why that is but I have collected some seed (picture attached). I know they say they 'wont come true' in what respect. I assume colour and appearance to some extent? Is it worth bothering or just buy more seed. I notice the seed are almost black in colour whereas the original seeds were yellowish in colour interestingly.

    Thanks for any advice

Yes,usually it’s colour and appearance that may differ. Always worth a try growing from collected seed, all it takes is a bit of compost and space.

Mine sometimes self seed in the garden, it's always interesting to see what colours they are, so give it a go.

They do set seed and it's easy to collect, dry and store.

F1 hybrids are the progeny of two different parent stock lines, you'll end up with F2 seed some of which will resemble the parents which are most likely to have poorer characteristics, less vigour, insipid colours, etc. I wouldn't bother personally as a packet of seeds is so little.

Yes I guess I'm trying to weigh up growing zinnia again Vs buying something else to try next year. I don't have a lot of space for many seed trays. I wasn't blown away by the zinnias this year therefore next years are likely to be less impressive if F2 generation.

I think zinnias need lots of sun to do well, sadly lacking this year. Mine were reasonable but not good compared to last year.

Most of the seed heads on mine have gone mouldy but they still have a few flowers.
I've never tried collecting seed as I usually dead head them in the early part of the summer.
