What are we doing in the garden 2024

I weeded the gravelled parking area on my hands and knees - so many buddelia seedlings from our neighbours collection. They're easier to pull up when the grounds wet. I've still got a largish area to do at the front of the garage.

I also planted a few daffs and smaller bulbs I'd inadvertently dug up elsewhere and put a plastic cloche over the smaller bulbs area to keep the squirrels away.

 

Got a bit too wet for the things I needed to do yesterday, but I had to go out anyway, so it didn't matter too much. Managed to get the other little bit of concrete done before that though, so I can get on with the timber edging for the newest border tomorrow - probably, as it's to be drier then. I got the main bit of timber painted and back in the shed just in time, so it should be well dried. Will hopefully get the rest of my bulbs put into pots tomorrow too.

Won't be around today either as it's to be wet, so I'm going to do some more painting at daughter's flat after my walk.

 

I spent some time yesterday up a ladder tying an enthusiastic Chevy Chase rambler rose to the rose arch. It was only it's 2nd year here and it has grown a lot.

 

Nothing today it's rainy weather so it's better not to start anything.

 

No chance of doing anything in the garden for days as it is either so wet or it is raining cats and dogs again. So bottled the grape wines (12 bottles) and started the quince wine (2 demijons).

Hope to get on with my newest border edging today, but I may have to do some of it undercover depending on what the weather has in store. It's supposed to be reasonably dry today, but windy, so it should be ok for sawing and painting etc.
We wouldn't get much done in the garden if we always waited for dry days though, especially at this time of year. Ideal for planting any new hedging or shrubs/trees. I've often done that in the rain - saves watering anything in too!
I have bulbs to plant in pots, so I can always do that too.

 

At the moment there's nothing that can't wait, got tulips to plant but have to wait for the gladioli to start going brown so that i can put the tulips in.
But for me I'm not doing it in the rain, have enough of that when i walk the doggies.

 

The forecast put me off even contemplating doing any gardening. I washed down the tiled wall behind the sink in the kitchen, there were cobweb drapes, the window sills in the sunroom, multiple dead flies and spiders, and did some tidying up.

I am so sad for Rob because I think he has lost the sight in his eye. It is obviously very painful when I try to sponge it clean for him and he hates having the anti biotic drops put in 4 times a day. I have no idea how it happened, I can only guess he must have spiked the eye ball rooting around in bushes at some time.
My daughter asked if I would like to go to an Apple Day on Sat. but I have decided to give it a miss as it will be a very muddy affair which will make walking really difficult for me and as it would be an all day effort Rob would get very muddy. They have asked people not to go by car if possible so for anyone going by car that usually means being pulled out of a field by tractor when they are ready to go home. Run of the mill down here. It is a shame as there are going to be craft demos., music, and food as well as tours around the orchard and apples to buy etc.

 

It's wet and gloomy here, again! The garden can relax, I won't be digging, pruning or casting aside any poor performers until I can avoid making muddy footprints on the paving I cleaned earlier this week .

 

I've got a paper bag of yellow rattle seeds, which I collected earlier this year, to sow before I leave for Scotland on Sunday. I don't mind gardening in a bit of rain, but broadcasting seeds really needs it dry... forecast says tomorrow will be ok. I won't hold my breath.

 

Will those take with a direct sowing @Liriodendron ? It seems it [yellow rattle] often works better sown in pots or trays and then planted out, but I can't remember.
I take it you're visiting your cottage - hope the weather stays fine for you, although I think it's to change back to the rough stuff by the weekend.
I'm hoping to take advantage of that good weather today, and finish the new bed under ny bedroom window, although I'd planned to do a hill. Back is too sore though. I have to accept I'm not 27 any more...

 

Not doing a lot. Watered the remains of the tomatoes, picked a couple of half ripe ones to finish off indoors and picked up the remains of some dead weeds on the slate path around the pond.

Yes, off to the cottage... most of the jobs I've got lined up are indoors (painting the stairs, replacing bureau hinges, replacing the fridge etc) so the weather doesn't matter so much. Though if we get a dry "window", I'll have a bonfire on the beach of the dead brambles I cut down in April. A special treat, since we're not allowed bonfires in Ireland...

Yellow rattle seems to do ok here if direct sown in Autumn. It's established itself well in quite a bit of our meadow area, but last year I didn't get the whole meadow scythed because I got sciatica, and in those uncut parts, which went soggy over winter, the rattle has largely died out. I've made some bare "scrapes" now it's all scythed and mowed, and will try it again. It's a bit cold yet (3C) for wandering around with bare hands sowing seeds, but it's supposed to be staying dry all day.

 

I will be trying yellow rattle for the first time this year. I plan to direct sow, but also keep a few back to try in modules. My seeds arrived in the post yesterday.
