I agree about eating simpler food, @simone_in_wiltshire. I have noticed the quality of unprocessed items has deteriorated markedly and I think this is part of the drive to shift people to consuming more processed stuff. If you buy a Kitkat (for example), it always tastes the same. If you buy an apple, it might be juicy, but it might be woolly and unpleasant. Enough experiences of fruit that is disappointing turns people away from it, even if they like it.

I also agree NHS advice on eating has been incredibly damaging and they take decades to update it even when there are multiple studies showing they are wrong.

I completely sympathise with people eating UP foods. It is cheap and available 24/7. It is tasty and quick. Humans are designed by evolution to be caught in the over-eating trap. It takes concentration, will-power and sufficient time within your daily schedule to resist the products on offer today.

Not too sure about that. :noidea:

I don't find it the least bit difficult to ignore processed foods and even when I was working six days a week with 70+ hours I always found time to cook good food.

Went out yesturday and the roads were like driving in a field!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's that time of year the maize harvest, but they can't say it's soil ersion and alot of soil has come from field on to roads by the means of tractor and trailar wheels, so now we need a lot of rain to wash the soil off the roads and in to the ditchies where it will then be a problem with flooding because ditchies are blocked!!

Just thought I'd update all of you that took interest in my 'encounter' with Mr. Careless Driver last week. Two lovely police officers paid me a visit on Sunday afternoon, and took a statement. We had a good laugh at my hurling of abuse at the man, and the officer in charge debated how he should word it! Long story short, they called in at B&Q on their way back to check the CCTV, and he left me a message later on. Unfortunately, the coverage was crap, so they couldn't make out his reg.number, so they can't follow it up.
C'est la vie, but on the plus side, the two officers were so kind and helpful, and I intend dropping by the cop shop to leave a thank you card. I tried to find an online way of doing it, but got nowhere.
It's easy to moan about the police, but we don't praise them enough when they do a great job, and I think that's important.
I know how it felt, when I was working, if folk took a minute or two to say they were grateful for any additional help they got. A few years ago, I received something I'd bought online, and I was so impressed with the way it had all been handled, I just dropped the staff an email later the same day. It was a Friday, and I got a reply from them almost immediately, saying how kind it was and it had made their day.
Small things can make a huge difference, especially when people feel they're taken for granted most of the time.

Glad the police engaged in a thoughtful manner, @fairygirl. Pity about the CCTV. Unless this was a one-off, out-of-character action by the motorist (which seems unlikely), maybe they will not be so lucky with the surveillance another time. They would probably be alarmed to know the incident had been followed up and potentially could have had consequences.

@shiney, I'm not saying healthy eating is impossible, but if you are a single parent in cramped, insecure living conditions, juggling childcare and low paid work, and a bus ride away from a supermarket with fresh fruit and veg, an UP cereal bar from the corner shop may be a much more realistic breakfast option than a boiled egg with soldiers!

Regarding food, don't you think, although the food might be considered unhealthy, people just eat too much of it.

I remember back in the 70s and 80s there was always this thing about how big food portions were in America compared to the UK.
We appear to have followed and people eat a lot more now than they did.

Yes ... but I think that is partly because junk food messes with your blood sugar regulation, so you think you are hungry when it dips dramatically after a spike. Plus, as the UP food is low in essential nutrients, your body instructs you to eat more to get the basics it needs. Add in the food on offer is tasty and moreish, with high salt and fat and sugar giving the brain a dopamine fizz, and you have a recipe for overeating.

What's with all the sourdough? Getting really difficult to avoid it. Tastes of vinegar to me.
I assume there's some commercial advantage for the bread factory.
Usually make my own sans vinegar but sometimes I don't get around to it

That may well be true for genuine sourdough but probably not for the fake stuff you get in the supermarket

Maybe they sell it with the idea of its benefits, rather than the benefits themselves, planted in our brains.

Many younger people don't seem to have ever been taught even the basics of cooking. I don't think Home Economics is taught in schools these days. They are brought up in a world of fast food or 'pinger' food (microwave) so don't have a clue how to even boil an egg.
It's not that new a problem either. When we married, over 40 years ago, my wife couldn't cook. Her mother's food was awful so it was probably a blessing that my wife didn't learn from her. I was a far better cook at that time as my mother had always encouraged by brother and I to get involved in the kitchen. Over the years my wife has taught herself and is now a very good cook. Without my input initially she would probably have just stuck with very basic stuff. In today's world she would probably have been a fast food 'cook'.
