How did we get in this situation, I've not heard anyone protesting about such things.

Tell someone they cant glue themselves to the road or throw soup over a painting and we get protestors all over about taking away our rights.

Can anyone understand that programme Only Connect? I can't understand the answers either. Does anyone watch The Curse of Oak Island? Been watching it for years, but no treasure found. The joys of TV tonight.

I feel extremely proud if I get an answer correct. Sometimes get one or two on the wall but I'm pretty good at the last round

Love Only Connect. :blue thumb: Round 2 is a killer though and I rarely get any right. The wall is my fave. Missing letters is a bit hit or miss. Sometimes I see it instantly, sometimes not.

I mute the sound if the contestants are badgered into singing! :help:

It is used, to check for people applying for benefits, to claim benefits you have to declare how much savings you have, after £10k your current income is increased by £500 per £10k until at £21k savings your income is classed as too high for benefits
So if you have scrimped and saved as much as possible, You get NOWT

If you have peed it all against the wall at your local labour club, and saved nothing You get ALL YOU WANT

Can't believe they call the state pension a benefit ? I recall all pensioners who are on any kind of benefit can get the winter fuel allowance so that isn't right.

I think something is going on, and it's about changing the way people think if they can get into people's heads that it is a benefit it will be much easier to take it away and means test the state pension.

I also get a feeling there is a move to change people's thinking about those with assets or savings and almost demonising them.
Making them seem responsible for all the housing problems etc.
Ripe to be ripped off by government.

Yes, the state pension is called a benefit so it is not seen as an earned "right", but some sort of benevolence. Plus, it then swells that section of the pie chart showing gov spending, making benefits take up a huge wodge, which then feeds into the mantra that outlay on benefits is too high and ruining the country's finances and therefore people on these must be vilified.

Government is turning life into a balancing act so that at point of death they have maximised their bleeding of you and removed any ability to provide for your children.
Being taxed multiple times on your money just isn't right

This comes about because we pay this years pensions out of this years revenue or borrowing rather than from an investment fund.
For police, fire, teachers and NHS among others the first thing off every authorities budget is that years pensions.
Some countries invest pension contributions in investment funds that then pay out the pensions as they fall due. Some of these funds are significant investors in infrastructure and housing as these bring in long term revenue.

Yes, but on the pie chart you could still separate out "benefits" and "state pension". The benefits section would then look far less dramatic.

You would have thought that around the time they brought in the law that all companies had to provide employees with a pension plan they would also have started investing government payments, or part of, in a view to gradually change the way they do it.
