Every person appearing in court accused of a criminal offence ( or "wrongdoing" as it is so often described these days ) is entitled to a defence. Whether the defending lawyer knows/suspects their client is guilty, they still have to act on their client's behalf. Maybe it's putting forward any mitigating circumstances to allow some leniency or maybe it's questioning the police actions/ the prosecution witnesses/forensic evidence etc. That's the system here and I'm not sure what other system would be better.
As far as Mr. Starmer is concerned, if he is still trying to define what a working person is he should stand down as PM as he is obviously incompetant in more ways than one. His govt has so far shown no improvement for the country and population as a whole - the previous lot were no better and it's fast becoming a "Round Robin" affair.
Maybe we should all vote for a Robin as the next PM - cared for properly ( cheap food and a roost in Parliament ), it would manage at least one 5 year term and would produce no more crap than those currently in power

      :oopss: Thank you Noisette47
I have read the explanation in the link you have pointed out which I have now read and I apologise:wallbanging: to ALL expats whom I have offended.

A very clear and understanding explanation.

Though in my defence I did add I was maybe missing something.......seems that I was :sofa:

The writing was on the wall long before they got into office - let's be honest, he couldn't even say what a woman was when asked.

For me, the actions they are taking are bad enough, but it is the hypocrisy that really grinds my gears.

          To make the text readable:

Looks like Reeves has been lying again on a more serious level.
Rachel Reeves makes a lot of her time working as an economist. After serving in a trio of junior positions at the Bank of England, Rachel says that in 2006 she moved to the Bank of Scotland to work as an “economist,” before leaving in 2009 to serve as MP. Guido spoke to colleagues of Reeves’ from her Bank of England days – one described her as having a reputation for being “f***ing useless”…
Reeves’ boilerplate biography, given to event organisers for her speaking events, says: “Previously, she worked as an economist at the Bank of England, the British Embassy in Washington DC and latterly at Halifax Bank of Scotland.” She is constantly praised for having an “economist brain.” She speaks of her time at HBOS in the midst of the financial crisis: “When economies tumble, it is those on the lowest incomes who suffer most. Some people lost their jobs but also their sense of pride.“ Guido probed these claims after numerous former colleagues of Reeves got in touch to raise questions over her CV…
The Chancellor states on her LinkedIn that she was working as an “economist” at HBOS. This is not true. Guido can reveal that Reeves worked in a mundane support department at the bank, according to multiple former colleagues. Within the Halifax/HBOS Complaints team there was a small support unit which managed administration processes, IT matters, and small projects and planning. It was a team of three people far from the Economics Department. Reeves held a mid-level position. HBOS was acquired by Lloyds in 2009 and the Chancellor left in December of that year to pursue a career in politics…
Reeves has a tendency to be selective about the truth when it comes to her CV – Guido exposed her “chess champion” myth as a falsehood according to records last week. Guido reached out to Reeves’ team – they did not deny she did not work as an “economist” for the bank, but instead said she “covered various areas using her economist background.” As she prepares to drop a huge tax bombshell on Britain, her self-styled claim to be an economic technocrat is unravelling…

Given the current KS definition of a working person as "a working person as someone who “goes out and earns their living, usually paid in a sort of monthly cheque and who can't "write a cheque to get out of difficulties". Then I've never been one as I was always encouraged to save just in case; no idea of in case of what that was never defined. So there has always been a "rainy day" fund to draw a cheque on.
Started off with a paper round and ended up as a minor minion in the NHS.
I'll still be working after retirement as there's always something to do in the garden.

Not offended, Purple Streaks, just sad that people in the UK are being misinformed and manipulated. Not all ex-pats are champagne-guzzling, château-dwelling Place In The Sun types. There are a lot living in very basic houses in areas of France that get extremely cold in winter and, just as in UK, are faced with a choice between eating or heating. Many made the move based on delicate, personal financial calculations which Government legislation can wipe out in a blink. I'm not complaining :) but you can appreciate why we're anxious as to what the future holds. We're easy targets for any colour of government :dunno:

Ditto Nigelj, Though I am working class, I Left school at 15 on the Friday and commenced work as an assistant in a Dept store £3 per 45 hr week
Then got employment in the shipyards semi skilled £10pw 40 hrs
Joined the Royal Navy after two years for 22 years, money a lot less, but visited the World, and unfortunately a small pension, that alongside my state pension puts me over the UC scale

I was always taught all my life from about five to keep a little money for rainy days
it was the way it was in the 50/60's so I saved what I could and often had to empty the bank for home repairs
So here I am on the lower state pension, a small naval pension, which everytime the state pension goes up my naval pension is taxed pro rata

Unless you are going to get a gold plated pension, Then do not bother, just pee it against the wall or have a great holiday everytime you can
You will qualify for all benefits

                    BLOODY FIREWORKS.

I’d forgotten that it was that time of year. Just been reminded by our next door neighbours who are letting off those very, very, loud, bright, screaming, rocket/bangers. Oh wot a larf.

Based on Starmer's definition of a working person, he will support those who work but choose to p... it all away at the weekend, but those who have had a bit of foresight and tried to put away for emergencies can go and (complete as you wish).

It was a cool but lovely day until I needed to go to the shop to buy something. Then the wind started howling, the skies opened up and graupel tried to pock me. What the heck did I do wrong to have the weather gods punish me!
