I think they clip onto a table and the top holds a skein of wool to wind into a ball. I have fond memories of holding wool on my arms while my mother wound it into a ball.

I think the operation for Rob is positive news @Goldenlily26 It's the best solution and a straightforward operation. It will save the trauma (for Rob) of having his eye bathed and drops in constantly. They don't like being man-handled for medical reasons like drops and tablets. I remember years ago a programme where the pilot of an amphibian plane had a Jack Russell with an eye patch that was always in the cockpit with him! The name Jack rings a bell.

It's pouring stair rods here with thunder and lightning. Went to the fresh markets in Beziers for fruit and vegetables late this morning. Grey on the inward journey and curtains of rain on the home journey at 12pm. It was forecast, despite when I walked Fizz this morning we had sunny weather but with great cumulus nimbus clouds. I am glad. I may be able to tidy up the vegetable garden next week with the help of a girlfriend and dig it over.

Reading and a quiet afternoon is on the cards. Fizz is cosy and cuddled up in her bed here with me.

My husband was a builder @Badly_Maintained so carpenter's pencils are still turning up here. Very good lead pencils!! Easy to sharpen with a Lagiole pen knife - a Frenchman's friend!

Grey and dull here but mild. Supposed to be sunny but we have heavy rain heading up from the south tho the radar says it's breaking up now and what's left may veer east and pass further inland. Looking very wet and soggy down by @floralies and @Busy-Lizzie and positively stormy chez @Tui34.

Slow start for me after a disturbed night - payback for sleeping so well on Thursday. OH is out picking up his gout meds and taking Harry to the car wash. Harvesting is almost finished here and the lanes are very mucky. Then we'll go and tackle tree circles.

Other than the curved part those clips look like what's used here to stop tablecloths flying off outdoor tables @RowlandsCastle.

Great result for your fund-raiser @Ladybird4.

So sorry about Rob @Goldenlily26 but dogs adapt well and it'll be easier for him than constant prodding and poking and eyedrops.

Glad you're feeling better @AuntyRach and hope you and OH recover too @Busy-Lizzie.

          Have a lovely weekend all.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my brief message and photo. I was at the museum this morning looking through some of the exhibits locked away. None of the three people on duty knew what this was, but I was certain that someone here would come up with a logical answer. Which you did!!
So many thanks to all of you. A mystery solved.

Sorry that the photo was upside down.

I wouldn’t worry too much about Rob, @Goldenlily26. My sister in laws cat had to have both eyes removed, on separate occasions, and lived a very happy life afterwards, able to wander round the house, and even through the cat flap and out into the garden with no apparent difficulty, quite spooky to watch! On our walks at the donkey sanctuary, we regularly met a little dog who was completely blind, enjoyed its walks on a lead and seemed very relaxed and content. And at least three of the rescue donkeys we know of have had an eye removed, as a result of ulcers or infections. I think animals learn to cope really quickly, just pleased to be out of pain, and don’t have any of the associated disadvantages of difficulty with driving or reading! I’m sure he’ll be bouncing back in no time.

Sorry to read about Rob @Goldenlily26 but as has been said he will adapt quickly - and dogs' sense of smell will help him.
@RowlandsCastle, our grandkids say that our house is like a museum! (the very cheek of it!). We have games of 'what do you think this was for?'. The answers are sometimes quite hilarious. My dad loved old maps and we have a varied collection, from an antique Joan Blaeu to old ordnance survey ones. The kids find endless fascination in those, as do I.
Hope your hand is soon healed @redstar
Glad the fundraiser went so well @Ladybird4 and was enjoyed by so many.

It’s been a beautiful day here. T shirt situation!

Time to bring the washing in and make a start on tonight’s food soon - Chinese chicken with prawn toasts I think.

Have a lovely evening - Strictly Hallowe’en Special anyone?

I'm sorry about Rob's eye @Goldenlily26. When my old Border Collie got cataracts the vet said it wouldn't affect him too badly as dogs have such a good sense of smell they can find their way by sniffing.

I went to the Farmers' Market this morning, met a friend and bought some veg, an enormous mushroom, some prawns, some pastries sweet and savoury, some apples and pears from the orchard man and some cloudy apple juice.

We've had a quiet afternoon, OH has slept.

Thank you for the handy tip about carpenter's pencils @Badly_Maintained. I never even knew such a speciality existed!
@Little_Weed, you certainly brought back a memory there. Many a skein of wool have I held up while my Mum, Grandma or Great Aunts wound tight balls of wool ages ago.
Good grief, @redstar, I am so curious to know what you did to cause such a long period of recuperation. Good to see you though and hope you will be right by C*******s!
I'll join you @AuntyRach - especially as you mention it has been T-shirt weather by you! Could be a fun evening tonight on Strictly. You'll have to nudge me if I nod off though - I am not used to such late nights as I had last night any more. I am going to sign out now and I'll see you all tomorrow.

Had a lovely day out in perfect late October weather at our nearest 'seaside', Weston Super Mare. It had grown a lot bigger and busier since I last went there over 20 years ago. Car park fee was a bit of a 'really?' moment, as was the fee for the nearby loos.

Decided to treat ourselves to a fish and chip lunch at a beachside cafe only to find that fish as off the menu, boo, sucks. Had to settle for a fishcake, not quite the same somehow. Ended with an icecream just for old times sake so blew the diet completely. Oh well, memories are worth more than calorie counting.

Weston Super Mare in my childhood was always associated with thick, gloopy, black mud up to your knees and the tide was usually out by the time we got there by train. Not sure now whether that was the underlying geology or the residue of the Welsh coal mines opposite. It certainly looked cleaner today! Not a proper seaside of course, but beside the Bristol Channel.

                            Hope everyone enjoyed their Saturday.

Thanks everyone. I am sure Rob will relieved not to have me putting drops in his eyes every few hours. He is already coping well not seeing with the affected eye.

Managed to get 2 loads of washing dry outside today. Glorious sunshine and so warm.
Should have been in the garden but batch cooked instead.
Daughter ans son in law called in on their way home from the Day Skipper course they did last week. They both passed, it doesn't seem possible they can now go out, buy a boat and go sailing wherever they like.
My grand daughter in Vancouver is packed and ready to go travelling through New Zealand, by bike, with her partner, for 6 months. They are planning to live there for a couple of years, he is part Maori so has family there. My son is discovering what it feels like lose a child to adventure. He and my daughter in law went to Canada "for a couple of years" and have never moved back. That was 25 years ago. All part of children flying the nest.

A very good morning one and all. I got all my clocks that needed manual adjustment done last night - forgot about my time switches on various lights - but mine and Cricket's biological clocks are going to take a while adjusting. He arrived in my bedroom today, wondering why I was not in the kitchen getting his breakfast ready. By the time he's sorted the clocks will go forward and throw him out again. Coffee morning today - I've made a tea loaf and honey drizzle cake to take. I hope everyone has a super Sunday.
