Ben, (dog), has been jumping on me at 5.30 each morning since April, I guess it will be 4.30 tomorrow.

We went to stay with some friends who had a smallholding in Wales. They had three dogs and seven cats - apart from all the animals outside. During the night the dogs had the lounge and we were told not to go downstairs when it was dark. We were only allowed to use the upstairs toilet.

The cats lived in the spare bedroom, which we were given. They didn't approved and tried to remove the door from the wall! They got locked in the kitchen.

We stayed there two nights and it was very cold. They told us it takes 12 hours for their boiler to heat up enough to warm the room so hadn't bothered to do so.

Needless to say, we turned down future invitations to stay with them.

I don’t know about your cat but my cat understood the figures on the clock and woke me up at 4 AM all year round. It took her only one day and then she figured out that she was hungry an hour earlier or later.

Wasn't it Jacob Rees-Mogg that filibustered the Daylight Saving Bill, which was strongly supported? And wasn't the original concern the Scottish hill farmers? Let's blame the Scots!

Blame the Scots all you like, except for Ledaig, Lagavulin, and Tobermorry! (J'en passe, et des meilleurs!).

The problem is that people make a fuss about the change. They complain about moving clocks (even it's mostly done automatically nowadays), but are happy to go to Europe on holiday and don't complain for a minute about being 1 or 2 hours ahead. Or worse, report happily back from their holidays in Australia/Florida.

Much worse is that people from Spain to Poland have the same time.
My sunrise is at 6:52, my friend's sunrise in Spain is at 7:34, and a friend's sunrise in Poland is 6:23 today.

It does tend to get complicated calculating things when travelling. Especially when you come to half hour time zones or when a country can't decide what time zone they want to be in. Back to the end of WWII Ceylon changed to a half hour time zone and then in early 1996 changed it to having a daylight saving system and changed it by an hour. Later that year they changed it by another half an hour .

Chatham Islands (New Zealand) decided they wanted to be different and added 45 minutes to it. They didn't care what the law said. The law was amended later on to let them do it.

An interesting read is A Pattern of Islands by Sir Arthur Grimble (written about 100 years ago) where the International Date Line used to run through the Gilbert and Ellice Islands (British). It's a true account of when he worked on the islands and became Resident Commissioner.

As, in those days, bars were not allowed to open on Sundays but because the islands were in different time zones they had different days. So they could go across to the other side of the dateline and avoid Sundays completely. They were made up of very many island stretched across the South Pacific and are part of the two independent countries of Kiribati and Tuvalu.

Well, no, it will still be 5h30. (Or it will have been 4h30 all summer anyway, depending on your point of view). Ben's right and so are my cats and the sun. Just because stupid politicians want to impose senseless rules on the population, it doesn't mean that we have to obey....

I experience this in daily working life @shiney. What I don’t understand is why people who live in countries with different time zones are not able to tell me that their town has got its own time even the county around them is 1 hour behind.
