HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CLOCKS GOING BACK?

We use Sti*k* St**f to remove all stick on labels now. Apply, leave five minutes and, hey presto, rubs off painlessly.
Not advertising product and I have no affiliation to the item/company.

 

I used to have a bottle of that, @Songbird, though some labels on Stewart plant pots were totally resistant to its persuasion.

 

I remember going to school when the clocks weren't changed. It was almost 9am when it got light. But going home in daylight was nice.

Re sticky labels I'm always getting the white spirit out, but be careful on some hard plastics as it etches the surface. Best to to wipe it off ASAP.

 

Actually i was awake around 3am as I wasn't very well, so it was me that woke him up.

 

I like sticky stuff remover for getting the residue/glue from labels off. When you first put it on it seems like it's not working, but it gradually softens and dissolves the sticky stuff so it can be wiped off.

 

A juggle! 1/5 of our household devices with a clock are smart and guide us to the new time. The other 4/5ths need a manual intervention, which is painful.

My trusted ex- phone-alarm clock (most handy, can be set to various wake up times according to home/ office days, needs charging once a fortnight and can be slipped into pocket if I wake up before it rings- wow, it's kind of a mobile phone ) requires quite a few button presses, and the cuckoo clock just goes mad when the hands are touched.

I remember when clock change was introduced in Finland in 1981. It was a big thing and a watch manufacturer grabbed the opportunity to buy the full front page ad space of the biggest newspaper to grab everyone's attention on the first ever Sunday of clock shuffle.

Apparently night trains waited on a station for an hour to match the new time (not sure what the trains did when the clocks went the other way- super speeded perhaps? )

Some sticky labels can be removed by simply heating them with a hairdryer, others by a goodlong soak in soapy water.

As there are 24 hours in any given day and it doesn't alter I don't see the point of changing the clocks in either direction. Farmers work whatever hours they need and with increasing mechanisation they are not dependent on daylight but on whose turn it is with the harvester.

France, like most of Europe operates on GMT or BST+1 and there has been talk in Brussels for years of staying in the one time zone and no longer changing clocks. However, not everyone agrees yet as there's quite a spread of longitude from east to west and they have more important things to occupy them.

 

We find, that if we can take off / peel off as much of the outer layer of the label as possible, this helps the underneath absorb the “ stuff” a lot quicker and more effectively.

It depends on the label and it's adhesive. I have a little knowledge of it, becaue I used to live with someone who supplied the adhesive paper for lots of labels for supermarkets etc. Sometimes, meths or surgical spirit works, and even nail varnish remover, but WD40 can also be good. It can be infuriating though when they refuse to budge!

Re the clocks - it's never affected me or my children, but this item was in our news yesterday, and it made me smile

I was under the impression that it was stated that kids were going to school in the dark, and that's why the experiment of not altering the clocks was abandoned.
That was when kids walked to school.

i can't really see that it has much effect on farmers as its not really a job you can do by the clock anyway, if it needs doing they have to do it, regardless of what a clock says.
Also complaints that it didn't start to get daylight until 10am in northern Scotland.

 

Yes - that's the problem @pete. Even where I am, it means darker conditions for kids going to school in the middle of winter, and of course - it's later the further north you are. Coming back isn't quite the same because of traffic being lower, and also because everyone is leaving at roughly the same time - whereas mornings are variable. It was very dangerous when they stopped the clock change.
My children walked to and from school every day until we moved further away, because I didn't have a car when they were young.
