Mr. Trump has made it clear that he believes the whole "Green" issue is fake/scam/call it what you will. No doubt his actions over the next 4 years will reflect this . His only concern is to "Make America Great Again" . Whilst it's understandable that any Govt. would wish to improve the basic standards of life for their own citizens ( sadly not much in evidence in many countries). they should remember they also need to look further afield and consider the planet as a whole.
Was America ever great with its inbuilt inequalities and its treatment of natives and "coloured" people?
No. You don't understand. I was simply comparing the cost of 'gas' in the different countries and showing how much more 'crippling' prices are in the UK.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. That's a whole issue that is erupting, I wonder how much that is going to cost us.
I am totally tired of this nonsense of constant apologizing for past cruelty by countrymen. Most of which happened was long before any of us were born. My ancestors came to Canada, bought land from the Indigenous and I have a copy of that deed to prove it. They never owned a slave and were never involved in any residential schools. Neither were and of their children, children's children, etc. We have paid literally billions and billions in "reparations". Indigenous do not pay taxes. None. They can live where they wish. The reserves without clean water have accepted money several times over, to install water treatment plants but they do not do that. Here, the big money is in the "Aboriginal Industry" and the only people making loads of money are the heads of tribes, lawyers and government workers. Keep "the grief alive and the money spinning in" is their motto. There is evidence of boorish behaviour in just about every society but why should we be expected to carry that guilt and constantly pay for the sins of someone dead for centuries. How much is being demanded by the ancestors of victims of the Inquisition? Or the developers of torture chamber equipment? or or or It's all rubbish.
I quite agree @CanadianLori but there are certain inequalities that make it almost impossible for indigineous peoples to improve their lives and make things better for their families and not just in the USA and Canada. Unfortunately, government policies over the last 2 or 3 decades in the UK make it almost impossible now for certain social groups to aspire to better things. As for the USA expelling immigrants, this may amuse you.
Looking elsewhere in the world, there is the same lack of investment in native people to keep them busy and occupied and interested in doing well in life and the same prejudice against them once they fail and fall foul of the law.
I don't think it's funny at all. Imagine a handful of Celts telling everyone to get off their island! There are lots of people who have no blinking idea exactly what goes on here. They just believe the banging of drums and incessant whining. Our Indigenous have more opportunities than most. They use the protection of their reserves to produce illegal cigarettes, and other contraband. And it is within their own communities that they also have the "have and have nots". A smoke shack supplier recently was ordered to pay his ex wife support and child support for the one child of their union, totaling $43,000. Per MONTH. Based on the income they could see. They couldn't track it all since so much was in dealing contraband goods via cash exchanges. Bet that fellow didn't share his wealth with his fellow tribesmen. These people do not have armed guards keeping them on the reserve. They do not allow outside policing. Yes, they would have to give up some tax considerations if they left the reserve but no one is making them leave. Lots work and live off the reserve but keep mailing addresses on the reserve so as to keep the government handouts flowing in. They get preference when it comes to government jobs or university appointments. They can attend our schools or theirs. They get lighter sentencing for crimes. Whether they live on or off the reserve. And the list of accommodations is quite extensive. And I have witnessed these situations. Not just heard about it. One of my acquaintances told me his tribe calls me an Earth Mother! And then there those who are whiter than me, blue eyed, and have an extremely tenuous claim to first nation blood lines. Still treated as full blood and rightly so. Just who am I to judge what genes dominate? In the end, your cartoon indicates that colonizers should regret not being conquerors and wiping out the entire indigenous population in order to prevent backlash!
@Obelix-Vendée I'd love to know what 'policies over the last 2 or 3 decades in the UK make it almost impossible now for certain social groups to aspire to better things.'
Since some republicans were claiming hurricane Milton was "engineered" and the weather was being manipulated by the government, I assume he is just going to turn the machine off
Well, I'd say social mobility has reduced considerably from, say, the 1960s. It's not so much "policies" (though liberal leftism in state schools has definitely disadvantaged those who need to compete for jobs etc with privately schooled children), but more the class system and old boys' network. Plus the growth of predator banking practices, trapping people in debt that forces them to become wage slaves. Really every policy that has enriched the rich has disadvantaged social groups who are not.
Just in case any of you were thinking of buying a gardening type present for a gardener, here are some ideas to not bother thinking about. Especially the watering can at £175… The 19 best Christmas gifts for gardeners, by gardeners
Do you really think that people had a greater chance of getting on in life in the 50s and 60s than they do now, I cant see that myself. I left school at the end of the 60s and very few kids went on to university in those days, now it appears to me the norm. Not that that guarantees that you will get on in life, especially if you take a pointless subject and are just their for the "experience" but it can certainly give you a bump up the ladder if you want it to.
@CanadianLori - @Tidemark is correct in citing attitudes and policies in Australia. I don't know much about Canada and its native indian tribes except for the attempts to abolish their language and culture. It does seem as tho Canada has moved further than others in giving them autonomy and self determination but it is human nature for some of them to take advantage and exploit the system to their advantage. It is incumbent on regional and national government not to be naive or too lazy to make sure things are done fairly. @KT53 It is well known that social mobility in the UK has fallen to very low levels. In the 60s and 70s there were direct grants to allow gifted kids to attend "better" schools such as Eton, Harrow, Winchester but also Manchester Grammar (boys) and Withington High (girls) in my area. At my second grammar school (Lymm) poorer but bright kids were bissed in from Irlam to benefit form better facilities and education. We had grants to go to university with fees paid by the council and a means tested level of support for food and housing. Nowadays to go to university you have to accept being in hock for student fees for decades as well as having to afford to feed and house yourself. That means so many just can't go. Apprenticeships are more appropriate for many but there doesn't seem to be any quality control.
