Picked all beetroot and celeriac and got some salad from the allotment. Also spread lots of manure and compost on the beds

I finally managed to dig deep enough to replace a sprinkler head that had broken and added a riser to accommodate the height needed to clear a new garden bed. It was hard work going down through hard clay and I had to keep jumping, both feet, on the top of the shovel blade to get it to bite into the stuff. I probably looked like I was trying to get the shovel to be a pogo stick. After several visits to the hardware store, I got all of the parts needed to frankenstein a sturdy fix. I am pleased that I got it done before the winter freeze.

And I've also been raking leaves and putting covers on some of my perennials. The almanac says we're in for a nasty winter and I'm determined to be ready for it.

Cleared yet another path that the plants insist on growing over. Many ferns and I did try to dig them up to plant them elsewhere but only managed to remove one. Cut the other fronds right back and then spread them with their sori in places that they might germinate. Found the onions!!!! Grown from seed and seemed to have disappeared but found them today. Not big but still worth using. Found again some more chinese gooseberries. Hard as rocks so will have to cook them with yet another quince we found. Doing a lot of finding this week!
Then removed a grape vine that we had with the others but wasn't happy. So replanted it and it grew like mad but the fruits weren't very good. So sorry it had to go. Maybe the space will be used for the pomegranate which has to be removed from the greenhouse.

Today I planted two hellebores into a container and put cloches over a couple of Salvias as we are due for frost next week.

Mulching, or Trying to I thought I had moved or lifted everything I needed to in the front garden but there's more. I had to lift a big clump of Iris as it was going bare in the middle, and as I'm sure you know, you mustn't bury the rhizomes or they won't flower.
Haven't even started on the back yet, hoping the gardeners that do ndn garden will be available to help. They do OH'S daughters garden, so will do occasional heavy stuff for me.

Naturally, I didn't do what I had intended to do.

Instead I raked a large amount of leaves in the front garden and couldn't be bothered to transfer all the way to the compost heaps at the back. So I filled two green waste wheelie bins as they were empty.

Then I worked on filling in the large hole in one of the front beds where the gales in April took a very large Laburnum out of the ground. The hole was about 3ft diameter and 4ft deep. So skimmed about 1" of soil off part of the large bed it was in and filled the hole. I skimmed mainly around some Dogwoods as there were no plants around them, apart from weeds, and then lightly tilled a lot of that bed. One of our Robins was telling me to work faster all the time!

Planted the bare root Scarborough Fair that arrived yesterday. Looks to be a good sized healthy one so will look forward to watching it grow in spring.

Whilst I was there I took a few cuttings from the nearby Falstaff, which I'll attempt to root. I've never done rose cuttings before and it's perhaps a bit late in the year so will just have to wait and see how they go!

                      Hi,

Two and an half days so far fighting my new computer and mobile phone; both will end up planted in the garden the way they are tormenting me; I'm sick of codes between email and phone. GRRRRRRRRRRR. :mute:

                      Kind regards, Col.

This morning I finished removing the dead box hedge in the garden. I didn't try digging out the roots as they are right on the fence line, but I've cut down the stumps as far as possible. Removing it has left a border area about 3m long and a decent width too - I've decided to plant some bare root Rugosa roses there, as I want something that will be tough and grow quickly. Also I like the thought of the giant rose hips. I dug a quick trench in the area removing some roots and stones and it all seems fine for planting in, so I will go ahead and order now.

Then I planted out a stachys I bought yesterday (another half price bargain) and most of my remaining tulip bulbs. Feeling excited about next Spring!

Well I've finally done something in the garden today rather late this afternoon until it went to dark . Started lifting the dahlias - salvias - banana etc for winter storage, seen no sign yet :fingers crossed: of dahlia crown gall , still got more to lift tomorrow / others I want to get them out of the pots quick couple of years ago they froze in the pots I couldn't get them out they ended up rotting away.

Throw tomatoes away and topped up the compost heap.

I still have a couple of dahlias in pots, but as we've to get dry, frosty/icy weather over the next few days and they have a lot of foliage, I'm sort of hoping that will keep out any wet/snow, and they might keep drying off. The soil in the pots does seem fairly dry just now. :fingers crossed:

I just did a bit of tidying yesterday afternoon, after a walk much later than usual. Lifted a raspberry which is now potted up. Just need somewhere for that to go - I have another 3 as well. Cut back some of the sweet peas that were beside it, and a borage, so that I could get into it. The wind the previous day had cowped the large pot of sweet peas that I'd untied after the rough weather, so they're now tied to the fence again. It was too late to do anything else, but if today is favourable enough, I might get a few other things done.

                              Hi,

Bron's mobile phone now sorted and on EE; new computer also sorted running Win11; accounts reset with new passwords; new wired keyboard installed and no problems now with letters repeating. Today I'm populating the computer but of course Gardeners Corner is already a click away; got to get priorities right. :dbgrtmb::biggrin:

Outside temperature dropping like a lead brick with snow forecast tomorrow so I might end up skiing down our steep rear garden. 7:34am and not yet daylight and it will be dark again by 16:04pm.

I might manage a violin practice today if I behave myself; what fun I have.

                              Kind regards, Col.

Tidying up in the greenhouse, cutting back the dead dahlia foliage, generally trying to create a bit more space so I can move around a bit better.
