Latest Moan From You and Me 2024

It only seems like a few years ago that they were turning off streetlights and then along came LEDs and we could have them all back on again.

It just strikes me that we are up the creek without a paddle in everything these days.
No housing
No power
Too many people
Not enough food
Prices too high
Weather crap
Hospital queues
Roads over crowded
Living too long
People dying too early
Eating the wrong food
The list just goes on, Oh, did I mention too many suicides.

 

I just dont think anyone can change the "system", we change the government but they dont really run the country, its the civil service that does that.
Any new government that tries to alter things just comes up against the brick wall of those people we never see, in the background.

 

To add to your word @pete , they didn't bother to put hats on the lights so light pollution has increased.

 

Cant see why a reflector can't be added to direct the light downwards, seems simple enough.

 

Hopping back a couple of posts, walking seems to be nowadays an "activity" rather than a means to get from place A to B.

My friend lives 5 minutes (drive) from the office and always drives in. Another friend lives 10 mins walk from the shopping centre but drives to do her shopping.

I don't drive so am entitled to both a soap box to stand on plus a halo I guess

Anyways, a carless lifestyle is very different to a car-bound one. Home location is dictated by the walk or public transport access to wherever you need to go, and buying things needs to consider delivery.

In everyday life, I notice that I often just walk rather than wait for the bus. 45 mins walk to the shopping centre to get my hair cut is a treat rather than an inconvenience.

 

That's what we are told, the oldies are drain on the young, pensions are too high and not sustainable.

On the other hand too many people eat rubbish food and die too young.

You cant win, I'm all for people dying personally, just as long as its not me.

 

We’ll muddle through. We always do.

 

Which PM said you have never had it so good, followed by the one that said you need to tighten your belts.
Fast forward and all we get is a 22 billion black hole.

My OH had two uncles, one born into a German family and one born into a British one. They had known each other since their youth. When WWII broke out they were each enlisted into their own army and found themselves fighting each other. Both survived. The German one always laughingly said that the reason the British won the war was because our tactics were so illogical and unpredictable that the German side was usually caught wrong-footed. We are the world leaders in muddling through.

 

On Channel 5, 1978 the winter of discontent is showing now, worth a look just how bad things were.

It's funny @pete that you mention your new companion. I'm known in the area for being the crazy German who always has a walk ( Autumn to late winter) or cycle tour. People see me daily on foot, and still tell me "you need a dog for walking" and I say, "thanks I don't need a dog to walk, I prefer to do it on my own".
