I've been taking Omeprazole for a few years now, it started because I was taking Naproxen most days to get me through a day at work with the knee problems and the back problems.

I dont take Naproxen now and haven't for about 3 yrs but cant get off the Omeprazole as if I dont take it now I get acid.

Its almost like my stomach has got used to it and without it it produces too much acid.

I suffer with acid reflux but do know what triggers it for me. That doesn't stop me consuming those items but I make sure I have the Gaviscon to hand. I was referred to the hospital for a gastroscopy, which was not a pleasant experience, but relieved to be told there was no damage to the oesophagus. My GP warned against long term, repeated, use of Gaviscon and similar tablets as they have a high salt content to counter the stomach acid.

Omprizole is the cure for me and avoid highly spiced food. Sleep with your head as high as possible because acid may finish up at the back of your throat which is very unpleasant. It also caused me stomach ulcers as it ate away at the lining of my stomach. I am almost cured now but I take an Omprizole before going out for a meal just in case as I once ate chopped up green chillies by mistake in my green salad.

Some body I know was advised, by GP, to reduce the amount they were taking gradually over some months. As stopping suddenly could cause a rebound in acid levels to higher than previously.

I do sleep with my head well raised. With having these nodules in my throat it causes narrowing which results in difficulty when swallowing food. I have often woken up through night thinking I am choking, the trouble is it makes me feel nauseous which just upsets my stomach even more.

I am currently on Lansoprazole, Famotidine and Sucralfate. The plan was to destroy all the abnormal cells in my esophagus and stomach by Radiofrequency ablation. To do that though there has to be no nodulars in my esophagus, I have had 3 trips to RVI to have these removed in the past only for more to come back when I was due to start the Radiofrequency ablation, case of back to square one. When I spoke to the specialist in July, another option will be surgery to have the diseased area of my esophagus removed, esophagectomy.

I started having to go for them 12 years ago. At first I would have a follow up every 2 years, then it went to yearly, then every 6 months and now its every 3 months. They are even more unpleasant now as the procedure takes longer as they take even more tissue samples. The only plus side, they only do the procedure while your sedated.

You make our symptoms seem like nothing compared to yours, hope they will soon get things fully sorted to you.

Wonder if you were ever advised to follow a special diet they may have recommended ?

Rather than raising our head with pillows, which can be uncomforble for a front sleeping position, we found it better to raise the whole length of the bed up on wooden blocks.
The only down side is that we sometimes end up slowly slipping down the sloping bed

My GP diet was to eat a lot of small amounts of food daily and not big meals.

Similarly suggested we change our eating habits, instead of the typical working persons usually biggest meal in the evening, to make the lunch time meal the main one , so you do not have as much food in the stomach when you go to bed.
Not always that easy for working folk but no real problem if retired.

It also helps if you lose weight and stop eating fatty/spicy food. I've now lost almost a stone in weight on the 5-2 Diet and don't get much acid reflux as before.

That's not a bad idea. I certainly know all about it if I eat too late in the evening, particularly anything spicy. We do tend to eat quite early anyway, rarely after 6pm.

I've tried having my main meal at around noon but then I end up snacking all evening before I go to bed.
I just end up eating more.

All you need is a little self discipline and not eat in the evening. If you do find anywhere with a stock of self discipline can I please have the address.
