Isn't that the reality with most conflicts? It's generally the leaders, be they civil or religious, who whip up the troubles and populace suffers.

Politicians over the ages would have been well and truly b*ggered if they had to tell the truth. Most of them wouldn't be able to open their mouths or write statements.

The government are on a knife edge, only 20% of the electorate voted for them.
Its only our cockeyed system that gave them a landslide victory.

80% against is not a good starting point with them then doing their best to piss us all off.

The money gained from tourists flocking to Royal events in the UK always comes up when the cost of such events is made public. I don't know if the tourism money offsets this as I've never seen any reliable statistics to prove one way or another. As said by @Fat Controller, the security aspect must certainly come into it as does security for Royals and for govt. officials - both current and past.
I'm not saying the late Queen didn't deserve a funeral service - she seemed to me to be a hard worker with far more political acumen than many of the govt. members she dealt with over the years.
It could be said that her death marked the end of an era and time for a change. Costly "traditions" are fine if we can afford them but obviously we can't if the recent govts. are to be believed. Despite the constant mantra about "hard decisions" having to be made, I'd suggest this govt has actually taken the easy route........take from the poor and give to the rich rather than the other way round.
As for a real Moan, the only "hole" I'm worried about today is the one in my GH - courtesy of Bert

Agreed - however, I think this is the first time I've ever seen such a strength of opinion and as much hatred for a government, especially in such a short space of time.

I'm not sure how this stacks up money wise but I think a penny on income tax and a penny on fuel duty, perhaps one percent rise in VAT would have caused initial unrest, but would have gone down much better with people rather than trying to cripple companies.

They made these stupid set of pledges during the run up to the election and have caused themselves all kinds of problems trying to almost hide the tax rises.

There is circa 33 million working adults in the UK, so their supposed "£22bn black hole" would have been filled by applying a tax that equated to £620 per working person per year. Of course, we all know that they've spent that £22bn and a hell of a lot more, so that is where the maths falls down.

VED currently expected to raise £8.3bn this year - raising that would have increased revenues by £415m

Fuel Duty currently expected to raise £24.7bn this year - adding 10% to that (5 pence per litre sold) would have added £2.47 billion

VAT currently expected to raise £175.6 billion this year - add 1% and that adds £1.756 billion - add 5% and that is £8.78 billion

IPT raises £4.5bn - 5% on that would have raised another £225m

Income tax raises £302.7bn - 1% there would bring £3bn

So many ways that the money could have been raised - however, one of the better things would be for our tax money to be spent much more wisely. The more they get the more they come back for more.

I think its called painting yourself into a corner, their manifesto tied their hands, but even so they are getting caned for it, it would have just been simpler to have been honest, the Tories were beat anyway.

I honestly thought we might be getting rid of the SNP once and for all at our next election in 2026 but with Labour making an absolute horlicks of things having only been in power for a few months I can see we might not be seeing the back of Swinney and his band of incompetents ( that is polite, I would like to say something considerably stronger but might end up in jail……not that likely tho as our prisons are bulging, so much so that loads of prisoners are being released early and if Nick and her husband can escape the clink anybody can!)

And it is likely to be discussed, as a petition has been launched demanding a general election. They believe the labour party have gone back on the promises, it already has over 1 million signatures.

By the labour party lower the national insurance threshold from £9100 to £5000, that now generates an extra £615 per working person per year based on the secondary threshold that employers have to pay.

It has gone up almost 80k in the short time I have been upstairs having a shower. I doubt they will call a general election, but how they dodge round the strength of feeling here will be interesting. I have a feeling that it will end up being a good demonstration of how they are prepared to completely ignore the electorate.. and that in itself will be further damaging to a government already viewed as tin-eared and incompetent.

Perhaps someone should bring fraud charges against Rachel from accounts...

The last time there was a petition calling for an early general election was debated on the 17th October 2022 with over 633k signatures since the 28th July when the petition went live. The volume of signatures for this current petition is far greater considering it has only been live since the 20th November.
