Good heavens @Goldenlily26! Please remind me where they are. It sounds rather dangerous.

 

They live in a small town called Canmore, about 70 miles outside Calgary, on the way to Banff and Lake Louise. When the temperature drops that low there are constant warnings on the local radio telling older people to sat indoors and for everyone to wear gloves and not to touch bare metal surfaces. Your hands would stick to the metal.You have to wear wrap around sunglasses because it is usually very sunny but your eyes water from the wind, then the tears freeze on your eyelashes and you cannot see. When you breathe in your lungs hurt from the cold air. I took my son's dog for a walk, not far because he had to keep stopping to remove the balls of ice which kept forming between his pads.
The walk was magical because what little moisture there was in the atmosphere was frozen into minute ice crystals which sparkled in the sun. It was like walking in fairyland. A stunning experience but not where I would enjoy living permanently, the Rockies and pine trees were covered in snow and the river was completely frozen over, a real live winter wonderland.

Extreme cold is very multisensorial experience at least for me. Beyond -20c everything is so deeply frozen that the air has a sound (I swear, I'm not too deep into my Saturday wine yet! ) and the snow inevitably present at that temperature muffles and distorts sounds in every way.

Lots of silences and cracking sounds and popping "freezing" sounds that everyone in Finland knows but can't quite describe.

The light is also a marvel, not sunlight but an omnipresent light from the moon and the stars and urban lighting, reflected from the white stuff. At some point of the day the light turns blue, it's the Blue Moment.

Incredibly beautiful when experienced by choice. When inflicted to extreme cold when waiting for the bus or walking to school the admiration of the natural wonder vanishes rather rapidly.

Anyways, extreme cold is very handy when washing thick items such as jeans, hanging them outside they freeze and when taken in just subliminate the water out leaving them completely dry.

Traditionally, bottles of Vodka are cooled in the snow and it is the first harvest in spring when the snow melts to find the forgotten and lost ones

Nostalgy to one side, this little Finn much prefers the temperate winters of North Tyneside!

 

Anything on the minus side is toooooo cold for me.

 

I totally agree with the sounds of freezing temperatures. They are quite noticeable if you choose to listen. I can remember when walking around Lake Louise with my son, I could hear low rumbles which my son told me was small avalanches high up in the mountains. A bit spooky! Certainly there are lots of cracks, rustles, whispers and sighs etc. My daughter in law told me the indigenous Indians believe it is the mountains talking to us. That I found quite comforting. I was also fortunate to see the Northern Lights there which was spectacular over the top of the mountains.
I would not want to live there, only 6-8 weeks of summer and the rest of the time freezing cold. Too much for my old bones.

 

Yes, I was sailing close to a tributary of one of the seven sins! I’ll make amends: warm and snug we may be (22o C) but by gum, we’re not half having a hard time visually!

Yes, roaming around the extreme south. Took in the exquisite Alhambra complex yesterday; it comes these days with reams of instructions, including Rule No 27: “Do Not Take Off Your Clothes.” … Rule No 31: “Do not refresh or bathe in the ornamental pools and fountains”. We were sorry to read this, as Mrs Lao had really been looking forward to streaking across the Patio de los Leones, and then take a plunge in one of the fountains, as she had done in Rome. Luckily, there were further options down the road (attached):
