I had a magical experience with nature late in July. While working in the yard, I noticed a baby bird sitting by the deck, the bird was chirping at me each time I passed by. This went on for some time and I thought its mother would return soon, but she did not. Walking over to the baby, I squatted down and began to speak to the bird, telling it not to worry, mom would return soon. When I stood to walk away, the bird got frantic and followed me, chirping continuously. When I stopped, it jumped onto my shoe and looked up at me.

So, I picked it up and prepared a lined basket and placed the bird in the basket. It made no effort to get away, so I ran a hot dog through the blender and got a pipet to give it water with its food. Placing some food on a small wood skewer, I offered it to the bird, and it took the food readily, as with water from the pipet.

Actually, it preferred to perch on my finger for its meals and had no fear of humans at all. I would feed the little thing every hour or so, letting it eat until it refused food. Gradually, I added some fruit and rasins to its diet so it would have a more natural selection. It soon was apparent that it was feeling right at home.

Trying to contact an animal rehabber proved unsuccessful, so I thought, I guess I am going to have to care for the bird. As it turned out, it was no trouble at all. It sat in its little basket and happily watched TV with me at night, and it slept soundly through until morning.

During the day, I let it use a dishpan for a bath and roam where ever it wanted. At this point, it could fly some and liked my shoulder and lap for places to rest. Strangely, it particularly liked to be cupped in my hand resting on my chest and have the back of its head petted.

As I thought it might, one day it simply flew into a maple tree, looked at me for a few moments and flew higher into the tree and disappeared.

It was sad to see it go, but it was an experience I truly enjoyed.
