My Bangladeshi neighbour of a few years ago had coriander growing everywhere.
I thought it was weeds until she passed some over the fence, obviously i was supposed to like it because all the English love this kind of stuff.
      Mostly compost to be honest.

Haven't bothered for years no tree nothing I've got better things to do . It just goes on to long now even from October by time its Christmas day I am sick to the back teeth of it , when I were a kid it were more of a December thing up to new years day, it doesn't seem to go up to new years day now it like a switch is turn off at midnight on the 25th .

The most annoying thing about it is you're expected to like x y and z and be present and put on a happy face that is Christmas . It's for the little ones really but I hate people putting on social media stacks of present they've got their little ones gloating in a way , makes me sick knowing that some can't afford it and their kids get nothing

Last year all the kids were obsessed with a soft drink called Prime; I saw a video on YouTube of a young boy unwrapping a giftwrapped bottle of same and weeping with joy.

It is really good to read all this! It just goes on far too long now in terms of the Xmas songs and carols blasting out everywhere, along with the often hideous inflatable lit-up Santas, reindeer, snowmen etc. The chucked-out trees in January is a sad sight to behold, along with overflowing rubbish bins.
I mentally cancel out the whole month because it is just so frenetic. I do as little as possible, see as few people as possible and try to leave home as little as possible. The whole season has become full of hysteria somehow and I have to agree about those awful round-robins.
I think if there wasn't such a consumerist build-up and less crazy shopping, then a few days of things like listening to carols, watching old classic films, with a warm space to relax in and pleasant food to eat, along with watching the birds in the garden could be quite relaxing, but somehow these days, I am already 'over' it by about 8th December...

There are an awful lot of people in jobs that become very stressful in the run-up, too. One of the more worrying aspects here is that healthcare professionals and ambulance staff all jump ship big time for the fêtes. Not a good time to fall ill or reach the end of the road, as we and my mother discovered when she died on New Year's Eve. Four elderly people in our village died that night. I often wonder whether any of them might have lived if there'd been holiday cover available.

That’s really sobering @noisette47. I have so many sad and difficult NHS experience stories, I won’t share anything sad or patient related but I have my own tale that I trot out at this time of year… It was C’mas 1999 and I didn’t see any family for most of the C’mas week as I was working nights (150 miles away) and my C’mas dinner was a fish finger sandwich on my own. Well, I wasn’t ill, nobody died, I wasn’t homeless, I did have a family and life went on. It was a reminder to me that it is ‘just another day’.

On a lighter note, advent calendars… how much waste and tat is created with these!? You don’t see any with just a picture behind the window (like back in the day) - it’s chocolate (minimum standard), or maybe even socks, wine or make-up. There’s even pet treat ones!

                  A very difficult situation @noisette47 .
Which leads to this sort of scenario....

How many folk end up in A&E or in a hospital bed over this 'festive' period, with things that could easily be avoided, or because they can't get it into their heads about drink/drug driving?

We owe it to those who work in hospitals, as well as the other emergency services, to try and lower their workload by being sensible about our behaviour.

I would much rather just ignore Christmas but there is no chance of that as my missus loves it. What she doesn't understand is that Christmas is a really tough time for me because I have no family of my own left. My last remaining close relative died unexpectedly back in 2017 and it had a far more profound effect on me than I ever expected.
We go to her sister on Christmas day, as we have done for many years, and my wife still insists that I wear a Christmas shirt and 'enjoy' myself. It doesn't work that way!

Ever year my dad told my mum not to spend to much at Christmas because unbeknownst to me, this was the time they laid off staff at his work. He survived the cull but never knew if that would last from one year to the next. I'm not suggesting we were pennyless but compared to some of my friends we got very little in terms of presents but in most ways we got much more. It sounds funny but by only getting a few things we actually had a lot of thought put into them. We got a small present each, I have a brother, and then a main shared present. One year we got a snooker table, another year a cricket set etc and the other kids actually envied us because our dad actually played with us whilst their dad's didn't.

I used to work with a chap that would work all the holidays days because he got time and a half, plus a day in lieu but more importantly, an excuse to avoid the extended family.
