I read that Setton variety are meant to be an improvement on Sturon which is the variety I normally grow. Any observations good or bad would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you found a source for seed of this variety, rather than sets?

I grow Golden Bear from seed but have not been looking for Setton variety from seed. I grow a mixture of seed and sets, not living in the warmest part of the UK sets are more reliable to produce decent sized onions but it all depends on that totally unpredictable thing called the flaming weather!

I did track some Setton sets down one year. I much prefer round onions to the flattened varieties and IIRC they were very good. A reasonable size and good shape. Can't comment on keeping quality as that varies so much depending on, as you say, the flaming weather

Thanks @noisette47 . Absolutely agree flat ones are a pain in the posterior. Maybe ok if you don’t have to deal with peeling them! The Setton sets are quite a bit more expensive than Sturon but the yield is meant to be better so might give them a go.
