Why do news programmes make announcements like "drugs gang sentenced to a total of 116yrs"
It means nothing, who got what kind of makes a bit of sense but just coming up with a total means nothing.:dunno:

The US is worse, sentencing individuals to 113 yrs in some cases. Or sometimes they are given a term "no longer than your natural life". Well, clearly!

What about the times that you see people convicted and sentenced to a several hundred years or more see List of longest prison sentences - Wikipedia
The question what to do when the convict inevitably dies. Is the remaining sentence to be inherited by the heirs to serve, or do they use it as an asset and rent the convicts cell back to the state to ease overcrowding; a bit like a lease or maybe AirB&B.

I dislike reporters using the word 'killed' when I think the more appropriate word would be 'died' because they seem to be using it for dramatic effect. The end result is the same but the intent of the reporter is suspect.

A recent report says some was killed in a flood whereas I think it should have been reported as died in a flood. Unless of course someone came along during the flood and killed them.

Also, with regard to dying, I deplore the slow demise of the letter 't'. I heard a reporter replacing 'better with 'be-er'. :nonofinger:

I sometimes wish our courts would give an individual 113 years, that would mean they would at least serve a decent sentence, so many get released after half the sentence given.
What happened to life sentences, about 10yrs seems to be that one. :dunno:
            Why call it life?

The irony of the MoneySavingExpert site @shiney. I contacted them at the time and pointed them in the direction of that F'book page, because they had OneCall listed as a top supplier of insurance, despite the long list of complaints going back several years. They weren't remotely interested in removing them, and still had them listed at the top of the page for months and months. It's why I don't use them for anything now.
They [OneCall] aren't even an insurance co. -just brokers, which is why they brushed off my query at the time, when I eventually got through to them. The guy I spoke to got really defensive and shirty, and clearly wasn't happy about being questioned.
The irony of their name too, when many people can't get through on the phone to them at all. :frown:

A fair amount of insurance is sold by brokers, I have car insurance with Hastings direct but I think it states who the actual insurance company is somewhere in the small print.

Yes - I agree @pete, but that company doesn't state that anywhere, or they certainly didn't when I had insurance with them.

I keep hearing this expression on the TV recently, never heard it until the last few months, is it new.

                    EARLY DOORS.

                    What does that mean?

I think it's one of those dumb football terms @pete. It's crossed over into 'daily speak' in recent years, on the radio and TV.
I presume it just means early, because that seems to be the way it's used. No idea what the doors bit means though. Idiotic.

'Early Doors' - people who customarily waited patiently outside Public House doors for them to open, pre-1988 wben the licensing laws were changed to allow pubs to remain open all day . Prior to that they closed in the afternoons until 17.30.
It's hardly a new expression, and nothing to do with football. Did none of you see the situation comedy 'Early Doors' first broadcast in 2003? Worth a look, very funny. :ccheers:

I've always considered it to be a Northern expression, fairly common in my yoof.

Yes, the sitcom by that name is a classic!

Oh well thanks for the explanation @Tinkerton it really is something I've not heard until recently.
I haven't seen that programme or even heard of it.
Obviously I don't get out enough.

I'd only ever heard it in connection to football pundits, or probably comedians using it in their p*ss takes of commentators.
I know nothing about pubs [nor would I want to know about them] or that sitcom.
