I was thinking that this weekend is probably popular for C’mas parties and how pleased I am not to be participating, both in general and because of the weekend storm.

Someone in work said they’ve spent over £200 on hair ‘do’, clothes, ticket and a taxi for the C.mas party! Pardon, what!?

Well, I suppose it’s OK if you’ve got £200 to spend on that sort of thing. The trouble comes when you don’t have £200 but feel obliged to join in with people who do.

Yes, I always think a midsummer celebration or gathering would make much more sense. The weather should be calm and maybe warm, the travel should be easier. On the other hand, it is easier to make an excuse not to travel to an Xmas gathering at this time of year, because of the weather and associated travel problems. I think one of those other enforced gatherings, the work Christmas party is just awful. Jolly small talk with people you can't stand and they can't stand you! The worst one I went to, the person next to me had a cold and was literally sneezing all over my plate of food every few seconds. I refused to eat another mouthful and was able to leave early, yippee, because I felt faint through lack of food.

Actually why not, like the late Queen, have an Official Christmas (25th December) and an actual Christmas (Midsummer).

I'd much prefer Christmas in summer, it just goes on for so long in December.
I dont think it would linger like it does if it was summer.

Yes and I forgot to say, though it is obvious really, that from a health perspective, it has always seemed a recipe for disaster to have this winter Christmas celebration: huddling indoors with windows not wide open, while all kind of viruses have a merry old time...

I've been to a few Christmas in July parties. It was nice not having to shovel a path to get out in order to attend :)

                      You had work Christmas parties?
A bottle of wine OR four cans of lager and a hand shake was all I got for my trouble until I changed jobs and worked for a one man business.
He used to take us for a meal, certainly showed up the big company I worked for earlier.

Personally I'd just like to see the relatives in Australia, not bragging about how nice the weather was.

Anyone been invited to a family C’mas and having trouble saying no? How about this reply -

“So we are to travel in the icy rain and bad traffic, be polite and sociable for hours, probably with enforced ‘fun’ including hats and games, then either drive home in the dark (sober) or stay overnight on a camp bed sharing a bathroom with 10 people. Oh, and almost certainly pick up a winter virus too… I’ll let you know…”
