The most emotional, happy, ceremony I have ever attended was a Citizenship induction service. The pride felt by all made the room light up with happiness.

I hope yours is as wonderful. I wish I could attend.

    Congratulations. :dbgrtmb:

Cut up my home cured bacon yesterday. It's unsmoked, I didn't have time to smoke it as was the original plan. Just a cheap loin with some belly attached from Asda. Also finished dehydrating some jerky, also from cheap loin. Two flavours, coriander/pepper and smoked Spanish paprika

As a test to see how it works, I managed to install a Linux distribution on my spare laptop. It was more difficult and required rethinking after the BIOS didn't launch from the USB. I found out I had to change the order of the first booting option. After I installed it successfully, I put all my data on it as a backup.
I will have to switch to a new distribution in Spring time and this gave me more confidence for doing it then on my main laptop.

I’m delighted that whatever you did made you happy, Simone, but if you’d told me that in German (of which I speak not a word) my comprehension of your happiness could not have been less.

I was left behind in the vocabulary race in about 1985. My first booting option, for example, is to wear the brown ones as the black ones need new soles.

@Tidemark In order to write comments in the forum you need a computer or phone/tablet, which has got a drive with an operating system installed (Windows/macOS/Linux/Android).
When your turn on your device, the hardware needs to know what to do.
The hardware has a BIOS (a software) for that and there is a boot order.
Option 1: start your device from a drive (C: in Windows, Macintosh HD)
                  Option 2: start from DVD/USB

I found out that I had to change the order in the BIOS
                  Option 1: start from USB
Option 2: start from hard disc

My USB stick has a bootable image of a Linux distribution.
The first time I failed on Thursday was because I thought that just plugging in the USB in would be enough but it wasn’t.

                      @simone_in_wiltshire my hubby asks:

Have you got Windows 10 or 11 on your laptop? Has it replaced your BIOS with UEFI, which stops you booting from BIOS?

The BIOS is always there, and UEFI is just one of the settings in the BIOS.
I haven’t had Windows on this spare laptop since 2018. I used to have Windows 8 on it.
In 2018, I pressed F2 while turning it on to come into the BIOS, I turned off Smart Boot (which causes the problem that a PC only sleeps when turning it off and the actual boot is never used when turning it on). Then I turned off UEFI. I finally added DVD as boot option, pressed F10 save and exit. With that, the system took the bootable DVD.
I then installed Linux which wiped out any trace of Windows’s boot manager.
In order to have Linux side by side with Windows, I recommend to use Windows Store which offers Linux for Windows. You would have to uninstall Linux from inside Windows Apps and Features if you don’t like it.
This is the best option for someone who doesn’t want to have Windows Boot manager overwritten by Linux Boot manager.
If you installed Linux directly on a second partion, it overwrites Windows Boot partition and that can turn nasty if you removed Linux by wiping out the second partition. Because of that, your Windows has no Boot partition. In other words, your need then to install Windows from scratch to get it back with boot partion.

@simone_in_wiltshire hubby says he is puzzled by "UEFI is just one of the settings in the BIOS". Where is UEFI - is it on your hard disk, so are you actually passing control to the hard disk?

PS you don't need to rush back as we're off out till late afternoon.

                        Thanks.

Please tell hubby that I have something with EFI enabled in Boot. Yesterday before I installed was written EFI disabled. It might be that the Linux installer changed that. I thought that EFI is UEFI, but I m probably wrong.

Hubby thanks you for the information. It's prompted him to go onto Wikipedia, which has a mind blowing amount of information of what's been going on in the background to control the functionality and content of users' computers.
