Tad windy, storm Darragh December 2024

Hope you didn’t have a bad time..

I live in South Wales we were battered by the storm. Amazingly only a fence panel popped out and was easily put back in and a couple of panes of glass in the greenhouse slipped but stayed put, thankfully.. so glad I changed my fence to concrete post after that last storm a few years ago took the whole lot down.

But others have had flooding, no electricity and lots of damage …

I live 20 minutes from the seaside town of Porthcawl you may have seen on the main news .. we all had emergency messages sent to our phones and on all the local tv news and radio to try and stay at home .. to my amazement the local news showed a family with small children that had driven down to watch the waves on the promenade and another lady walking her two dogs …. !!!!!!! In the height of the storm!!!!

The wind is easing here in County Durham, 'though still very windy. Various weather apps said 30mph average windspeeds, with 60mph gusts here. The garden, cold frames, observatory and trampoline survived and everything else has remained where it should be. I have got the trampoline tied down on half metre stakes into the lawn and ratchet straps, so wasn't expecting that to move, but the cold frames have had their lids forced open in the past.

I did donate a brick to my neighbour's recycling crate, to stop it blowing up and down his driveway.

 

Its been rough here and still is, constant drizzle and heavier spells of rain, even tomorrow looks rubbish now as well.

These storms are nothing new really IMO, but the thing I have noticed with the last one and this one is they hit us and then come to a full stop, time was when they would whistle through in about 12 hours, this is nearly 48 now and its still going nowhere fast.

 

The wind's dropped a lot here now, to more normal levels, apparently gusting up to mid-30s mph. Still raining though. There are a few plastic plant pots blowing about (empty ones from the "corner of shame") but I haven't noticed any actual damage. Will do a better check tomorrow - forecast's better

 

Wouldn't that be because they're bigger (wider) overall lately? Meteorology is a fascinating subject. I keep meaning to study it properly

 

The storms in February 2020 also took 48 hours, three weeks in a row and every weekend! Past weather events

We used to have bin collection every fortnight on Wednesday until last year. For what ever reason it happened for many weeks that on that Wednesday a storm came up which was really a disaster. So many litter bins blown away. I think we all learned from that and have hardly any debris flying around when we have a storm. Only my neighbour downstairs two weeks ago lost a paper bin. They learned from this!

 

How fast do these cyclones move across the country? You can always tell where you are in relation to the centre of one by the wind direction. First the rain was on the front of our house, then it moved to the side then the back. Quite a large - wide storm.

 

I'm in Carmarthenshire and our power has been out since 4am Saturday, due back Monday 11:30 pm! Not only fence panels gone, but a load of feather edge fence over and the worst thing was my grevillea which has been pushed over, breaking a few roots. I have wired it back in position using a couple of stakes, and hope it recovers

 

I'm sorry you have no power @CarolineL, no outages here. A friend living 7 miles away has no power either and it won't be back until 6 pm tomorrow.

I remember my dad taking us in the car to Porthcawl to 'see the waves' and I remember having a soaking from a big one that caught me before I could get out of the way ! It wasn't a pleasant journey coming home drenched in cold sea water

 

Some maybe bigger but they seem to rattle in off the Atlantic and then stop, there was a time when they would just keep going up into Scandinavia, this one is slowly filling and moving south east.

Well we are at 48hrs now and and its been pouring down in the last hour, more rain forecast all day tomorrow, the wind has subsided slowly but still gusty at times.
2020 Is quite recent in my estimation.

 

It hasn't really been bad here at all just a normal slightly windy autumn day, very miserable and dull though.

 

Certainly not complaining, but wind didn't seem to be anything like as bad as forecast here. We have definitely had winds as strong, if not stronger, in the past without Amber weather warnings.

 

I thought we’d got away with no damage to the roof but have noticed some gaps in the pointing near the ridge. Oh well
