When it comes to noise, I get really irritated by the lack of proper speaking levels. Why do so many movies now have some of the actors talking in whispers? These aren't scenes at a pro golf tour or hiding from monsters, just people conversing, so why the lowered tones as though they're talking conspiracies? The ones speaking normally are easy on the ears but straining to hear the whispering pushes me to change the channel. Particularly before I'm forced to turn up the volume. Because you know that if you do that, an advertisement will air within moments and blast you out of the room!

OH frequently complains that he can't hear me (my voice isn't high pitched and I don't have a southern accent (US or UK ). He refuses to go and get tested. I suspect there's at least an element of "male selective hearing disorder" and he doesn't want to get found out! I wish he would get it checked though, in case he does need hearing aids or ear syringing or something.

People that are hard of hearing always seem to put the emphasis on the person they cant hear, such as, dont mumble, or, speak up properly.

My hearing is poor when I am in a group of people and they are all talking, cant have a conversation in that kind of setting.

But I always own up to the fact its my hearing and don't blame everyone else.

I can hear every word in a film made before a certain time, around the early 90s, but after that time the actors started talking to one another and not the audience, presumably considered more realistic, but to my mind it doesn't work, even if you do turn the sound up you cant understand their burbling.

My late father was pretty deaf and hated his hearing aids which he got much later in life after years of needing them but did nothing about it. He hated the hearing aids as it increased both what he wanted to hear and background noise. Things like parties with lots of people all talking at once were an anathema to him.
His ears were damaged during the war as he was in minesweepers and had ear plugs but they often were blown out.
After the war my mother tried to persuade him to get his ears checked out….
“ there is nothing wrong with my hearing”!
He used to get strange looks when as an example he would be told someone he knew had died “ oh that’s nice “ would be a typical reply:rolleyespink:. He would get cross if he presumed he had not been offered a choice to eat. “Would you like poached, scrambled or boiled eggs dad?” Reply of yes please so you just went ahead and cooked what you felt like!
When he became very deaf it was quite difficult to always include him in conversations and sometimes he did get a bit left out which I’m sure happens to lots of people who are very hard of hearing.

A friend of mine was hard of hearing and since I spent so much time around them, I began talking very loudly and unfortunately that bad habit stuck with me. I'm sure those with good hearing thought I was shouting at them! I've since toned it down

I like new technologies and I hate them too. Some of my friends only message on Messenger, some by email and others texting. Texting I cannot do as my cell phone is only for using wifi where free (at home and some public places) and for emergency calls. So yes, good for that use. Everyone used to be using emails but now it's an assortment so jumping between platforms is now mental acrobatics. Wasn't it easier when people just picked up the telephone and dialed?

My family didn’t have a phone of any kind until after I had left home, when they and a neighbour clubbed together and got a shared telephone number. A party line it was called. One telephone handset, wired in, in each house. You had to be careful that the neighbour wasn’t on their phone when you picked yours up to make a call since you could listen in to the whole thing.

Up until then you had to walk half a mile down the hill to the local phone box with pennies in your hot little hand, press button A and all that, while standing in a puddle of stale urine left by last night’s pub leavers who couldn’t hold it until they got home.

There is supposedly a link between hearing loss and dementia and my father has reached the age where his hearing loss is noticeable so we keep urging him to get it checked out. I have always found it a little odd that people don't want others to consider them deaf, so don't go and get sorted, but are less inclined to worry about getting glasses.

I had some hearing loss when I had chemo and it took several years to come back. It's a little unfortunate as I was super sensitive to noise before and it's returned with a vengeance now.

Interesting, but how about me I have had little hearing in my left ear probably since childhood, but only picked up a couple of years ago. Right ear I have typical adult hearing age related loss.
The effect of the lack of hearing in the left ear was to make pubs and social gatherings difficult and not helping my natural introversion.

I had my hearing tested two years ago (age 74) by an ENT due to balance issues following multiple unknown min strokes and came out low level normal. T'other Half cannot hear me speak to him but hears me whisper to the cats!!!! :paladin:
